My letter from the LTSA reads
"If it cannot be started (i.e. when you turn the key on the vehicle, the vehicle will not start) it can be towed on a "A frame" and will not need a WOF or registration."

In the last few months there was some shit about this on offroadexpress.kiwi
From memory a central? North Island porker has been cracking down because like always with law, there is something written somewhere else that contradicts the rules everyone has followed for years, and some overzealous cop is now running out of pages in his ticket book with a grin on his face.
Nzfa may have something on their site too.
Mr vahey? Seemed to be on the ball about it.
I used to aframe a little and I just chucked some magnetic tail lights I had on the back, but a trailer is a good investment. That looks like something you'll just cut your teeth on so plan ahead trailer wise incase you go bigger. My mate had a similar setup but went to a 1.6 yota and coilovers pretty quick. Gbox linkage from the vw box still on there is always being a problematic though. He got sick of throwing money at it, partly because he kept crashing, so it's quietly for sale and he rides a yzf instead, which he crashes just as much![]()
Why would people bother with a normal trailer, if you can make an A frame 4 wheeled trailer that wouldn't need to be WoFd or registered?
You don't.
I could tow a stripped down series 2 landy at 950 kg as is without brakes or load it onto a 300kg trailer and need a braked trailer.
The law allows anybody to tow a disabled vehicle.
I would be happy to publish the letter.
This all came around when I redgistered the S2 landy as a trailer and then tried to get a wof for it. Which I could not do. I even had a plug that wired the landys tail lights into the cars.

It would require a fair amount of engineering to get brake linkage sorted for an a-frame, or you could use a braked trailer instead. Vehicles (and tow bars) have braked and unbraked ratings... Depending on the buggy/whatever is being towed weight is, you could need a serious tow vehicle to handle the unbraked weight.

It's clearly written that a trailer cannot be something that can travel under its own power, so complete waste of time to try, unless of course you pulled all that gear out. They'd probably want all the mounts chopped and the like too so it wasn't too easy to return to self propelled trim.
