    Oil leaking everywhere, ahhhh

    hey guys

well my bike decided to leak oil , I rode home from work Thursday straight of the motorway left lights did a drifty thing straightened up and took off , I thought it was the rain ,
was going to go for an afternoon ride yesterday after work
started the bike up left it idling for a min or so putting on gloves and helmet jumped on reved it and looked down and saw all this oil pouring out of it ,
took off fairings yesterday got to dark ,
started it up again today and as soon as u start it oil pours out from behind this dark grey cover where chain is , ive looked top and bottom cant see the leak its like coming out directly behind this cover ...

could any one help please , this is my first bike and I actually don't know to much about them yet to just rip in and fix straight away , I will once I have an idea what I need

3 possible causes come to mind. (there may be more).

    1 Gear select shaft seal.

    2 Countershaft,(sprocket shaft) seal.

    3 Neutral light switch.

Take that grey cover off, (noting the gear shift coupling position), and degrease the area, and let it dry off before starting the bike. (make sure the bike was in neutral before removing the gear select shaft linkage).

The oil leak should show up quickly.

    Good luck.

    All good advice.
Seems to be coming down behind the chain oil accumulation. Maybe collapsed final bearing. Any noise while riding or tight spot in chain.

    I'd go with either 1 or/and 2 myself ...

Unless it's fom the breather hose from the rocker cover ... and then there might be more serious issues involved ...

The simplest ... and most effective starting point to be sure ...

Might not have been put in properly, but also possible that the bearing has movement and it has pushed the seal out.

Any chance of blocked breather and pressure in the bottom end shifting it?

One of the likely causes is, I'm afraid a fucked CS bearing in behind the seal, there.

If you take the chain and sprocket off you should be able to feel bearing damage by playing with the shaft. You shouldn't be able to fee any lateral, (up/down/forward/backwards) movement at all. It's also likely that if it's fucked it'll feel like there's grit in there, intermittent free/stiff feel.

You can ignore it, but it may cost much more if you do.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon

My thoughts ... if it came out of it's own accord once ... it will come out easier on it's own accord again.

When and where that will happen ... is the gamble the rider must take.

People pay a lot of money for those Scott Oilers - yours was free.

Fix it. The next time may coat your rear wheel causing you to slide off a cliff and break your spine.

But it could get more serious than that ... he might hit a Yamaha before he goes over the cliff ...
