Arranging to catch up with rellies for lunch!
Ok, there is a few places I haven't been on, but one I am not sure about.
Avoca Hotel to Bulls, should I take the suggested shortcut or keep to the main road?
Cheers Geoff, we've been past this memorial I'm sure, just can't place it. Just need an excuse to warm up prior to the day haha...
Makes naff all difference IMHO.
If you run the shortcut make sure you turn off onto Warrengate Rd just before Fordell, or you'll end up in Hunterville haha
Unless your fuel strategy requires you to get fuel at the BP, id say it would be faster as well as more fun going Kaimatira as there would be 6km of 50 zone to get though otherwise
Thanks, will check it out
i just didn’t want to be diverting into 10k of gravel or suddenly end up in hunterville or wanganui river
Fuel, something I have to sort out, as the fire breather has a rather optimistic gauge. Although I have never got to the bottom yet, I don’t want to tempt fate or water in tank.

Anyone else see Long John pacing like a Lion in his cage. Mbike at the ready?
Well, I tried and failed. Didn't manage to complete the 1KC, but came close.
By the time I reached Taupo (about 700km from the start) a family problem was emerging at home that needed me to be there, but I was also coming to the realisation that if I continued through to the finish I'd be dangerously fatigued and riding in the dark. Mostly brought on by getting soaked wet in the first two hours and then being wet & cold for the rest of the day.
Lessons learned :
Leather riding gear might save your skin sliding down the road, but it won't keep you dry in the rain.
Fewer gadgets on your bike lets you concentrate on the riding
(I had put a couple of GoPros and a GPS speedo on, but they were distracting)
My throttle grip (supplied by Fast Bike Gear) provided welcome relief for my right hand (not the sort of right handed relief you're thinking)
Thanks to eldog for accompanying me on the trip.
On a positive note, my bike worked fine, and I did manage to clock up around 850km over 12 hours under difficult circumstances.
So I'm still keen on trying for the TT2000. Being in February the days will be longer, warmer and I'll be better prepared.
The two longest legs of the TT2000 are about the same distance, so as long as I stay dry it's probably achievable.
You gave it a good go
I did wonder how you were, since you were soaking/dripping wet at the first CP - the leathers aren't that water proof
The cold can suck the energy from you on long rides.
No worries - nice to have someone along for the ride
I think you will need a fuel tanker......
and a spare battery
and if you need someone else along for the ride drop me a line, you never know I might be free.
