The picture of the dead little boy being carried ashore was tragic, but in the DomPost on the opposite page was the report about the Palmerston North fire where a child died as well - any less tragic? We need to be fixing up our own problems first.
Also taking refugees is not going to fix the cause of the refugee problem. The shithole that is Syria & Iraq, and the shitheads causing the problems - ISIL/Daesh and Assad need to be fixed first, and the refugees will, if not stop, then at least reduce in number.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.

It may not fix the cause but it's the least we can do.

    tragic loss for NZ parents

gotta stop my kids smoking in their bedroom

    they could adopt a refo

Myself I don't think we need refugees, we have enough to worry about, need more jobs here in NZ

Crisis in Europe was happening years ago. Remember the Eastern block orphans, The Poles travelling to the UK and Ireland looking for jobs that the local people didn't want?
This has just spread across to the middle east. Unrest in countries that USED to have dictatorships who kept rule. Not necessarily the best way.

Europe isn't a land of milk and honey, just to these people it is.

What would happen if they were sent back?

    I don't have the answer.

I don't think we need them either ... and we still have to decide on what flag to change to ... (if WE decide we do need to change it)

Plenty of milk here in NZ ... we just can't afford to buy any ... and honey isn't the Bee's knees either ... (see what I did there) ..

The difficult options would then be considered by them ... easy options are not always best. Most in NZ have no idea what they can look forward to ... either in the refugee camps or in their homeland. Is the sight of dead kids lying dead on a beach ... helping or hindering the real problem ... ?? (like why they tried to leave and climbed on those boats)

Remember ... the father of that dead boy PAID $5000 Euro's to get on that boat. (hardly a penniless citizen then)

Plenty in NZ say the same ...

Like it or not ... some things we (as a nation) cannot change.

Some we do may help a few though ... ask them if they appreciate it ...

Looks like a two-pronged approach is needed.

Work to solving the problem in the refugees' home territories, and help accommodate the displaced in the meantime.

And since it could be argued the yanks had a fair part in stirring this crisis into action, is it fair to expect them to take the lead in a resolution?

are we changing the flag? black flag background white skull with ferns as cross underneath?
I have no idea we were doing that. I think we could have a more vibrant flag - how does that affect all those people who served/fought under our current one.
If we reduced the number of crims there would be large amount of 'secure' housing units available with'social workers' built in.
Any refugees who have trade skills would be accepted, only problem the extended family rock up as well, who usually dont integrate with the greater community.
Media beatup - Dont use the dead kid arguement with me. Everyone is equal.
Simple - Stop the boats at point of departure. get them to land boat unload and then sink it.
if they sink boat with people on board - rescue them and set them back to country of origin.
    it will cost, i guess.

Secure housing ... I never thought about that ... (but don't tell them about the CCTV )

I never meant it as (or part of) an arguement. It's called responsibility for the actions one takes. Regardless of the desperation of the participants.

Equality is a concept few understand ... and how does that equality relate to my post .. ??

A good plan .... just keep the images of dead kids washed up on a beach ... out of the News on TV ...

CCTV = pay per view, 'Tonight on the big screen its the big fella taking on the new recruit'

Responsibility - for self learnt that through motorcycling....

Most of those countries the people are coming from and are in dont treat the women (or kids) as equals

images - dont watch the NEWS it gives you so much more time for friends, rellies - those who are important to you and you can work on stuff you want to (and bike stuff too)
The Flag thing is just a diversion because there is noting else going on.....

The British are suggesting removing the source of the problem which is the war between Assad and ISIS, both as bad as each other.
However Putin has stated that Russia support the current regime and there are Russian 'advisers' and heavy armour there.
Looking like another proxy war unfolding, if not already happening.

Its just the same old war as it's always been, just relocated slightly. It serves the US/Israel faction well to keep the middle east is a constant state of conflict.

Good book on the topic "The Great War for Civilisation" - Robert Fisk

theres something more important going on?......

seems like the whole of the middle east has been undermined, in a determined way so they become more westernised?
just support whichever radicals which will remove the current regime, then support the next group which support your own ideas. Sounds like big brother on a grand scale.
