I like to think that my laptop (which is a beast, but I like it) could be used in the case of a Zombie outbreak as a Weapon of Last resort....

bwaaaaaaaaaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaaaaa... heard a similar thing from a mate a few months ago when he was told by the boss that he could pick his own laptop. They are hard to justify given that they're designed for gaming eh lol.

It's even harder when Steam and Origin are installed on your current Work Laptop

It would, but you seem adamant you need those things because you don't want a gpu so you can't farm it out there, so have to go with a more expensive lappie.

So why not just get an i5 with dedi gpu for cheaper and look into using the gpu?

They're really not, just google cuda. I've justified SLI 660tis and green LED case fans for work compies before

Ok, that does make it a little harder to justify then

Ugh, dunno if I'm keen to go down that road, but good to know that it's an option.

I'd laugh harder than that if someone came to me with that request...

When users do kick up a fuss (and it's rare) I remind them that users come and go, the network never does. Therefore network > users.

When I built my desktop a couple of months ago I didn't bother with an i7, getting an i5 just below unlocked, and spending the difference on better graphics. For gaming and most single threaded type purposes, the i7 doesn't really warrant the benchmark difference... so money can be spent with better returns in other areas.

So offload the grunt. Chuck SQL in the cloud. Run vs local. Presto.

I use a tablet for remote dba support. Often over 2g.
At work I have a full blown desktop I can remote desktop back to from my mobile.

Or you can spend some time configuring your local instance.
Bare minimum to run on a laptop without killing it, limit your ram access so that your laptop has 4gb of unreserved space plus 1gb for every 8. E.g if you have 8gb of team limit your reservation to 4. You have 16gb of ram you need 6gb that SQL has no access too. Etc.
If your running 2 or more CPUs you want one tempdev file for every CPU. But no more than 8.
If you never push from your machine to live regularly run a Script to disable full recovery and purge your log files.
Turn off auto close and auto shrink.

If you don't ken what I am gibbering about send me your specs and I will send you some scripts.

I can get a little militant about it but I say make your work fit your tools. If you have tried and can't then you buy hardware.

You sound like a right tight cunt One of 'em used to stream snooker and darts (n stuff) from his house for our entertainment at work. Excellent for downtime and highly recommended as a user appeasement method lol.

Like I said earlier, this is going to be a dedicated dev machine and I'd like it to be as performant as possible to save as much time as possible. We had seriously munchy desktops at my last work, but on a couple of the projects it was quicker to fix bugs than it was to spin up the project and unit test them. This machine needs to be ready for almost anything as I'll not be sticking with one particular architecture or indeed a single hosting environment.

I hear ya big man . One of the finished products will likely end up in the cloud, and whilst I've thought about throttling SQL, when it needs to grab resources I'd rather that it can, as it may highlight a coding issue that'd otherwise be missed, especially under load testing.

Heh... yeah I've been the same since post #2, but was holding out for "that guy" who's persisted enough to find that 1 company that does what I want and therefore saving dipshits like me decades of research. It is not looking good so far lol, so will likely have to buy and upgrade. WTF is the world coming to when abundantly available technology, isn't

Next time let us know what it is you want in post #1 instead of #18 and #2 might better answer your question. And don't forget, some i7s are just dual core on mobiles anyway.

Or just learn to code for common devices, thus allowing you to buy a common device, cheaper.

And you don't have to buy and upgrade, just get an off the shelf one that has what you want; so what if it has a little more than that? It'll be cheaper overall.

I did. I said I wanted to build my own. The rest is pretty much moot.

    lol...

It's looking likely that that's the route I'm gonna have to take in light of a lack of a true custom solutions available. Piss poor really in today's world, but not unexpected.
