They were pretty good in their day.
Gary Wendt won the National Enduro Title on bored out XL175.

All my mates had Xl175K1's, I had a Suzuki TS185.
The Suzook was faster in a straight line but in the forest there wasn't much between them.

I learnt to ride on my sister's xl185, which is somewhat different sure, but neither are pretty in a Norton kind of way.

    I'd prefer a TS250M over all 3.

Until I rode one I'm sure, but that pipe guard is something.

The abuse mine took trying to keep up with my mates on their TS185s was amazing, the tacho would regularly point to Nippon Denso. I did put three pistons in it though.

Sweet handling wee thing, and the couple of xtra hp I wrung out of it via a cam and compression improved it no end.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon

What then if not the bike the dudes Butt?

The XL175 is an weirdly odd honda orphan nothing much in common engine wise with anything else that i have seen
looks more half a CB350/360 than any of the other singles

Um, still the Norton, but don't let me distract you from what catches your eye.

Move South...Better circuits, in use more often.
That said, any race bike sold ex Auckland has to be viewed suspiciously. Don't care who's selling it.
Many years of observation - and being caught personally once - leads me to believe it's a different mindset ooop there.
My standard advice now is to only believe half the claims - and strip the bike immediately on arrival....

Don't say that, I'm probably listing my 72 ( ish) BMW race bike soon as hanging up leathers.
But hanging onto the R65 one that I bought of 'Bruce" in ChCh as it goes quite well.
Auckland mindset...I'll have to ponder that over my trim while latte and organic carrot cake.

Anyone actually owned/ridden one of these?
Back in the day stories of TS 185's do not count.

    Meh.
I'm not wasting any TS185 stories on anyone who can't make up his mind between a Norton and an RE5.
Anyone with that level of mental illness can make up his own stories, far better than mine...

If its quirky I like it, but only in a " thats interesting" rather than " I want" sort of way.

Once upon a time I rode a Honda 150 2 up from Saigon to Hanoi..... Honda Fighthawk, but rule #1 of Fighthawk Club was no talking about it.
