It must have been one of the podcasts I listen to, I think "Intercepted", but they were saying that the US backing of the Saudis in their war against the Houthi rebels in Yemen has been worth 20 Billion to the armaments suppliers.

I note that Trump said if he went into the Middle East he would take all their oil. In his blissful ignorance he is unaware that would be a war crime. Then again, he doesn't tend to bother about laws, conventions, or other such encumberances.

So...By it's actions and by siding with the US, those countries have said they support Al Quaeda and Daesh in the Middle East over elected governments.

It's hard to see what Assad had to gain.

The area of the country that the Assad clan had support of the people, was quite small. The rest of Syria was ruled by force.

The first chemical attack began the wheeling and dealing. Obummer started making noises (didn't act though) and then the Russians said they'd broker the deal which included America promising not to get involved if the Syrians handed over all the chemical/bio shit.
Russia keeps a vital customer of their military equipment, gets to test and show off some of their stuff (no precision guided stuff though, as they don't have any...) to pimp their sales and marketing for other buyers.
The latest sarin attack tipped the scales, especially with a new Prez in town.
