The only other thing he could do is refuse every applicant that did not speak English to his level of liking. and refusing every person who would cook a curry. Advertiser in OP should have just said "White male Kiwi guy seeks flatmate .... blah blah blah". Doesn't contravene the Human Rights Act and many of those he doesn't want will filter themselves out.

Bottom line is that you can't advertise in a range of ways but you can still make your decision with all the predjudices you have as long as you don't verbalise them.
