lol I didn't pay much attention in history... but Lobengula was the chief of either the Matablele/Shona or part Zulu tribe in old Zimbabwe/Rhodesia... his witch doctor advisor told him that cameras would steal his soul...

See fish's post - that's the dude. Not a fun guy to be around if he decided he'd get his jollies at your expense...

Lobengula's a new name to me - learn something every day (and now I guess I can turn my brain off!)

not really lol... I only know that much from reading Wilbur Smith books... and partly pretending to pay attention in history...

Wilbur Smiths two series (the Courtney and Ballantyne series) have a lot of very accurate (even includes real names like Mugabe and the such) history...

I like anything top shelf as in spirits, I mainly drink Jim Beam or Southern Comfort, very nice on the rocks or with a hint of L&p.

    are they any good?

I have a Wilbur Smith book or two sitting around that I've sort of inherited, but Ive always sort of ignored them for some reason. getting into a new author is one of those things that requires a certain amount of courage and energy.

should I take a punt on WS then?

segueing back to the Ities, I just started on umberto eco...

    these romans are crazy.

[edit: yeah, sorry about the hijack. um... FECK! DRINK!]

    Fuckit, Kenya isn't realy Africa
To every man upon this earth
    Death cometh sooner or late
And how can a man die better
    Than facing fearful odds
For the ashes of his fathers
And the temples of his Gods
