The lead rider fucked up and the others followed. Sorta like target fixation on the guy in front. Keith Code writes about racers following another into trouble.

If you are following another rider you shouldn't be looking at them, you should be looking around them. Whatever, these guys don't come across as top men on the job.

Or maybe the ditch suddenly moved?

I have a mantra in my head which goes "LOOK AWAY LOOK AWAY LOOK AWAY" whenever someone crashes in front of me. Very easy to focus on them and follow them off track.

Summed up perfectly, I use to be a roving marshal at track days and lost count of the number of times I have watched this unfold in front of me. Front bike runs off the track and the following bikes follow. Either the following riders get target fixation and can't look away from the lead bike or are riding beyond they ability and using the lead rider to guide them around, then when he runs off they don't have the skill level left to navigate the corner them self. Lost count of the number of times I told people to ride there own ride not the guy in fronts ride, they where easy to spot as they mirror the rider in front like a shadow. The good riders ride more like racers and follow there own lines and pace.

Some of SH1 is like an oil slick down that way at the moment, not sure if that could have anything to do with it, more
    observation required?

They should be congratulated for their restrained speed, they could have been going along at 261kph.

Yes more observation may be required as I have not been on that road but same rules apply, not reading the road for your self or riding to your conditions which may be different to the lead riders as he may have better tyres, better bike, etc. Just cause the guy in font enters a corner at high speed doesn't mean the following riders have to. In my experience it is usually ego that leads to these multi bike crashes as people can't be left behind even when the conditions are shit and if they where riding by them self they would have backed off.

Yeah, but what if any parts that went down the "track" were Harley Davidson parts?

Pretty sure I haven't seen one of these in amps.

How do three bikers go off the road and into a ditch where no other vehicles are involved?
tar bleed, gravel, pot hole, rocks, bikini blonde on side of road, fucked up chamber, plus the shit mentioned above. Three is a good effort. They give one time but it could have been staggered a bit (not all within line of sight).

I understand what you're saying, it's hard to focus on keeping you're own shit together when the person in front of you goes down and then throw gravel in the mix. All were also following at decent distances.

But in this case I think target fixation was only cause of the third rider to go down. There was five in the group, first one went down, second one made it through, the third and fourth didn't even see the first go down, the third went down because of gravel (same as first) and the fourth saw then go down and grabbed a handful of front brake and went off. The fifth saw it happening and managed to stop in time.

All of it happened under the speed limit as well, no real pressure to keep up as it wasn't a fast ride.

Boom! But don't let facts get in the way of a horrendously written/worded/light on fact news blurb and a good lynch mob. Were they also from the 'town' that thinks solar panels suck up all sunlight?

Seriously though, hope they all recover well and that (if applicable) the council/contractor is held accountable for the condition of the road.

The news article is terrible, as if anyone just rides off the road for no reason, but that's journalism for ya.

It was a straight going into a blind right hand down hill corner.

And it isn't specific to them either. I have seen more than a few local farmers up north who feel like the know the road, that they know no one else is around and use as much of it as they like.
