Shortest route to Opononi from Wellsford is via the SH12 (see attached map). A total distance of 185Km from Wellsford to Opononi. That alone is going to take you more than 2hrs. You'd make good time along Rauawi Straights (if you don't get done by a cop), but the worse bit is that you will be riding through Waipoua Forest at night. This part of the road is a tight twisty road that often has moss on it. This makes it slippery if wet (which it is more often than not). You really should leave riding through Waipoua for when you have daylight so that you can see the road properly.
