    Car insurance

I know we've covered motorbike insurance and everyone has a different opinion. But what is everyone using for their car insurance?

I'm 24 (so under 25) and just put down a deposit at the dealer for a 2016 mitsubishi triton glx-r (I keep going to say gsxr....). I don't want the cheapest insurance, I want the best cover. So not even going to look at state or youi.

At the moment my bike at shit heap car are insured by protecta. But my $3000 crap bucket costs more to insure than my bike which is insured for double the car... and I'm not really sure what it covers.

Being a brand new truck I'm pretty keen to splash out on the insurance... just in case. I'm getting free roadside assistance through mitsi for 5 years, so that's not required through the insurer.

So who are you with? How is the cover?

3 of my cars are isured with Classic Cover with a Vero policy for low milage vehicles.

Apart from a problem with Smith and smith glass over a custom made very expensive wind screen after the canterbuy earthquakes I have been very pleased with the service.

Have had my cars with AA insurance for a long time, compare pretty well on price and have always been really good to deal with.
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

You can waste half your life getting quotes and juggling prices, pros and cons....
I use State, always have been good, do it online, click, pay, all sorted...
Except you cannot insure bikes online, which is wierd, but then again when I insured the DL1000 VStrom, they didn't have it in the data base
So it is now a SV1000....
Got a cover letter to make sure that if something happens it is indeed covered....

We use State, they've been really good to deal with in recent years, not that we've had any claims. We have 2 cars insured with them and get some decent discounts because it's part of a total package which includes house and household contents insurance. My bike is insured with Protecta too. Protecta also give discounts for each of my IAM test passes which is very welcome.

My old Mum lives in mangere bridge, Auckland. She's been with AA insurance for ever, also a member,
and never made a claim. She rang me, asking if there was cheaper insurance about, she had questioned her premiums, and was told it was high because she lived in south Auckland. I said ring around. All the major companies were cheaper, she settled with AMI and saved heaps.
So if you don't live in a GOOD area AA insurance may not be for you.
My bikes are with Vero, they are fantastic to deal with.

Completely true, if I lived 200m further west, on a street where my car would be considerably more likely to be interfered by passing hooligans, the insurance would be cheaper.

It doesn't hurt to look behind the name either, IAG owns NZI, State, AMI and some others, Suncorp is behind AA Insurance, Vero, AMP, different brands of the same thing in the end.

Was with AA Insurance (as an AA member I think I got a whole $5-10 discount on premium). Sold vehicle (planning to buy another) and stopped the policy.

Came time to insure the van, nope, no recognition of my previous customer history and wanted about $1700 a year for the van (full insurance inc glass - van has a lot of that ). Spoke to Youi (before the bad stories came out and only out of interest) and they were indicating about $1000, then couldn't continue because actuaries wouldn't touch my spec of van. Bullet dodged.

My boss has been a customer of AMI for a while, they've always looked after him (inc a claim via me on one of his vehicles), easy to deal with, sorted everything etc. They wanted about $1050 from memory, bugger it, as you said, don't need the very cheapest and given boss' history, easy choice.

So I've been with AMI for over a year now. They also took into account my history from AA to give a discount, and in a short while I'll have FreeB Max, which is about 60% no claims discount and on FreeB, it's for life.

Ami are right next door to my bank, so I'll get a quote in person, cheers guys.

I got a quote from AA and they wouldn't let me insure the ute for its value, the lowest I could insure it for was $10,000 more than what I'm paying. That was about $1200/yr with my AA discount.

AMI....they treated our claims promptly and fair. One stolen car got paid out even though we were technically wrong and they could have legally dodged the claim.
Opinions are like arseholes: Everybody has got one, but that doesn't mean you got to air it in public all the time....

If you're comparing insurers, you might be interested:

Insurance Australia Group - NZI / State /AMI
    Suncorp - Vero / AA
Tower - demutualised 1999, listed on NZX

So the majority of retail insurers in NZ are Aussie owned.
I think YOUI is South African (but I wouldn't touch them).
There is also a new Jaapie company about to commence operations - Hollard (A- rating)

Best to check the financial rating of any insurer: http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/regulation_a...surers/rating/

I wouldn't go with anything less than A rated.

AMI for us, past 10 years or so, house, contents, cars. Bike thru Kiwibike. Yes we've had claims thru AMI, no problems. Premiums seem fair when I've shopped around.

AA insure had the cheapest house/car insure combo around.
Was with state for years but their prices just kept going up every year.

Have not used YOUI to claim for the bike yet but their Prices for Learners are pretty good When the AA flat refused to cover me on my 6L

If you insure based on price, you will probably get the service you paid for...
