As another who has been associated with the aftermath of bits of people and other animals spattered over heavy equipment [in my case] i wouldn't have wanted it to have gone there.

Only someone in a comparatively wealthy country, with a pretty good human rights record would be in the privileged position of conceiving such a perversion. I think people who witness the events that lead to the images on rotten.com et al probably feel differently about whether such a virus is a good idea…
All the corpses on those sites for your edification are someone's mother, brother, sister or dad. How would you feel if the mangled body one of your loved ones was put up on the web for the entertainment of others?

i dont no if you recall, but a year or 2 ago rotten.com put up photos of a machete murder in South Auckland that someone got from police files or Court evidence.
The family got wind of it and asked rotten.com to withdraw the photos, since they were identifiable, which request was immediately complied with. the story made it to front page of teh NZ Harold I think.
rotten is a statement. not porn or snuff, but a sociopolitical effort to jar people from complacency. agree or disagree, as you stated earlier, we are fortunate that our civilisation grants them the right to say and show such things, regardles of whether we personily wish to hear or view them.

Identifying features are probably the crux of the issue WRT the 'taste' boundary line for content on the site. Most know the nature of the site, and like B-Net radio stations, the position of Rotten.com is probably allowed a little more leeway to deviate from social norms because of this.
I'm sure that plenty of the piccies on the esteemed site are probably medically derived...some perhaps escaping necessary censorship of identifying features. Having studied in a para-medical field, I've seen some foul pictures in my time, so I don't think I'm too sheltered or complacent. The role of rotten.com et al is on the boundaries of what is acceptable, and like pr0n, one is duly warned of the nature of the subject matter before entry. Such matter should not be foisted upon people in public fora, nor linked to without due warning. Informed consent is the key for viewers.
