    Rz250r f1

Hi guys, I've started a restoration of an RZ250 F1 and need to find good sources for parts, I'm looking at needing to source a new crank and piston kits for starters, is there anyone here in NZ to contact.
    Cheers

For a std engine weemoto or yambits in UK will likely do Mikita parts that are quite adequate. Crank rebuilding is a fraught affair as the pins are part of one side of each web. If that is knackered you need another web or two. Hard to source.

I'd recommend Pete Sales at Total motorcycle in P.nth if you need someone to put a crank together.

Heaps of banshee aftermarket cranks on eBay that could probably be pressed into service as the 250 and 350 are the same.

Norbo at LC Crazy (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ultimat...nk%20page.html) has some good bits for the YPVS. The site is a mess, but he has been good for the LC bits I have bought in the past
Parts are common in the UK for these. Some Banshee parts fit.

Hi guys, cheers for the replys, been pretty busy but have managed to find time to do a bit of work on the old girl. If anyone is interested I may keep this going as a bit of a project update thread. I've been looking for a RZ F1 for a few months and out of the blue was offered this one and just had to have it, she was saved from a wreakers by the previous owner and sat for a couple of years in his care before coming to me late Januray. So now the project begins, she's now completely stripped, frame being blasted this weekend and painted original red next week, rear brakes and triple trees rebuilt and painted, inner rear guard, airbox, 2 stroke tank and electronic boxes cleaned and polished ready to go back on. Engine was on first oversize but left piston had caught top ring on port so looks like going to second OS, crank seen better days so ordering new complete crank next week, nothing unexpected really and piece of mind knowing top and bottom end is all new. That's it for now will update when I have more time. Oh and looking for 35mm forks, mine aren't to bad but some better ones would be nice. Cheers

A quick update, blasted the frame and swing arm on Saturday, I borrowed one of those pressure pot type blasters, set myself up on a big tarpaulin behind the garage put on all the safety gear and away I went, first hour was fun but by the end about 4 hours later I was over it big time so that was the first and last time I do that, next time the experts can do it.
Etch primed the frame and swing arm and left to dry overnight.
Sunday I repaird a couple of fairing mount tabs and welded up a small crack I found on the frame, etched the repairs and set it aside to await paint.
Tidied up a couple minor things on the swing are and shot it with silver paint.
Also managed to clean up the cylinder head and paint.

Cheers for the comment on the TZR, it was in similar condition to the RZ when I got it, took me about 5 months to bring it back to life, I'm pretty happy with it but need to tidy up a few minor things on it still, figured if I get a little over working on the RZ I will go for a blat and that should get the motorvation back. Nothing like giving a 2 stoke a good caneing to put a smile on your dial.

Yeah was bloody hot, had all the gear on and did it out the back of the garage in the sun not nice at all but now she's all red and shiny and looks oh so nice so was worth all the effort in the end.
Painted her Tuesday after work, it's was a bit of a mission getting to all the parts of the frame, I used a small touch up gun first to get all the hard parts then switched to a bigger gun to do final heavy coats. Looks like I got it all haven't found any bits I missed so happy with that.
Left paint to harden up a bit then Thursday night was spent fitting the triple trees and started on fitting swing arm etc Friday night.
Some good and not so good news, the good is the new crank has been ordered with a big thanks to a contact down Wellington way and the not so good is the recon guys have deemed the left barrel stuffed but looks like I may have found another pair still on standard bore, should know more on that next week.
Also made a couple of fairing stays as mine were missing just need tidying up and painting, again with a big thanks to another contact I've made up auckland way who sent pics and diamentions of originals.
I will spend a little more quality time with her over the weekend and post how I get on. (the bike not the wife )
    Cheers Jason

On my `88 the arms that complete the linkage into the swingarm were pretty sloppy having rusted and worn. You could grab the wheel and lift it up a cm or two. I got them turned and some brass bushes for the swingarm to match. That worked well and lasted forever.

Good call I was in two minds if I should replace the bushes, mine are still ok but maybe not as tight as they should be, I have some Teflon rod at work so will chuck it in the lathe and turn up some new ones. Cheers for that.

    Shortly after you have it rolling you'll want to loom it. While you are there two thoughts;

-the early model had finned regulators. They were reliable. The later F2 had a flat pack arrangement that wasn't. Not sure about the F1. I'd swap it out.

-second, the 4pin plug from the stator is underated for the job. With a bit of corrosion they burn out overworking the rest of the system. Replace with a bigger pin connector. Flatpin job from Supercheap will do the job and look period with other connectors. Only drama is the plug needs to be fitted after the stator loom is passed through the engine hole. And disassembled if you need to take it out, but that's easy.

Check other connectors for tarnish. I'm experimenting soaking contacts in cheap clear vinegar.

The F1 has the earlier type finned reg, can get a little confusing the F1 as its a cross between the earlier and later model bikes. From what I understand it was only made for a year as a bit of a stop gap model until the new styling was ready to be launched. The F1 is my favorite of the RZ range.

Cheers for the heads up on the stator plug I will look into doing the mod when I get to that stage.

Didn't do to much to her today but I did spend a few hours playing around on the computer drawing up the decals ready for the vinyl cutter. Did the shadowed RZ250R for the fairing, didn't come up to bad just a little adjusting to do then order the correct color vinyl for all the decals on the bike.

Didn't seem to find much time to work on her this week but managed to get a couple of things done.

Started fitting a few electrical bits I had cleaned up and decided to use stainless cap screws to keep things tidy.

Started on the wheels also, used paint stripper to get rid of the old factory paint then sanded the bare ally with 360 grit and polished with autosol, I'm happy with the look as wanted a brushed look not mirror finish. Masked all the polished parts which took ages and hit them with gloss black epoxy enamal.

Also started on making replica cans as mine were stuffed and as I want to keep her as original as possable decided to make my own out of stainless. Came up pretty good just need to find 2 good original baffles now.

Oh and new crack arrived, looks very pretty. Turns out the barrels I brought are not the best and not useable so if anyone has one I'm after a left barrel that can be bored to 2nd OS.

That's it for now and will update when a bit more is done.

Update time, been spending a little time on her here and there as I can.
Ended up rebuilding the original forks, the chrome pitting was between the top clamps so after a bit of measuring discovered 38mm OD stainless hyginic tube was a nice snug fit over the fork tubes so cut 2 peices to fit between the top clamps and slid the forks in, looks nice and tidy and will suffice till I find some better ones.
Have trial fitted the wheels without tyres for now, thinking of fitting Bridgestone BT45's.
Also cleaned up and clear coated the peg mounts.
Still looking for barrels that can be put back into service then the engine rebuild can be started.
    That's it for now. Cheers

Nice work, done in great speed.
I had one of these it was a great bike.
Nice project and it will take great pride in your shed when its done... shame mine ended as road art lodged in to the side of an escort van.
