    2004 gsx cuts out

    Hi there.

Does anyone have and ideas on why my bike will just die at random.

While riding along it will just cut out like you have just turned the red switch off. The head light stays on but the engine has no spark.

To fix it all you have to do is tap (even the shortest of taps will work) the start button again and it will fire back into life. Then it will go fine for any amount of time weather it's 10 secs or 30 mins and maybe do it again or maybe not.

Other than that it starts first time every time and run fine.

    Thanks

have you checked to make sure nobody has wired the kill switch up to the brake light?

Sounds like it is rooted. I will give you $5 and a bag of chips for it.

    Side stand kill switch.

Check the side stand kill switch. After a while the pivot/bolt can get worn an/or the tang on the side stand can get bent back making the switch just in contact.

Add in a bump in the road and the bike thinks the side stand is down long enough to cut out and die, usually at highway speeds rather than sitting at lights or at idle. Older GSX's are good like that. Bend the tang back in, or check switch freeplay before engagement, and sidestand pivot slop is not causing this.

Clutch cut out switch wires could be playing up too.

May or may not be the problem, but worth checking and eliminating.

Whatever it turns out to be sounds electrical, kill switch or safety kill circuit. Could also be loose wires or corroded bullet connectors.

    Hi
I read lots about the kickstand switch so i followed other threads ideas and unplugged and joined the wires together but still no joy.
Have been going over other wires making sure good connections. Pulled kill switch apart and cleaned that up to.
    So far still doing it.

Check the reg/rectifier connector plug and test the reg/rectifier.

I had the same problem last week and found the connector was melted

Resistance check the plug leads....These can cut the spark when they get hot but be fine until then sometimes.

Perhaps wire bypass that kill switch all together for now then you know its not that for sure.

Start the bike and turn the bars full lock both ways to see if and wires from the head clusters have worked apart where they bend around the steering head ect.
Wiggle all wiring from ignition/kill switch to home and the battery terminals.

    Back to basics chap.
