First time buying a bike from a dealer - do I negotiate?

I've never bought a vehicle from a dealer before so this is all new to me.

I'm buying a 'busa from cyclespot tomorrow. 2015, 2000km, $16.5k. I've borrowed the money from the bank so I'm a cash/EFTPOS buyer.

When I had the test-ride, I told the salesman it was the colour I was after, a lovely bike and that I was keen.

He said he had a Saudi guy after it also but he was being pissy about the tradein value being offered for his R300.

I left $50 as a refundable "you'll call me before you sell to someone else deposit".


I've never paid the asking price on any vehicle though - was wondering what the usual way of negotiating with a dealer is?
Do you just pay the ticket price or do they have movement?


I'm thinking asking for a discount down to $15k (from $16.5), first service, heated grips and a pair of gloves. Am I going to be laughed at?

I would.......Cash talks and bullshit walks.....16k is a shed load of coin of course you want more!!!.

Let them sweat for a week then.

Make a list of what you want to paye/extras you would like...Make and offer...If turned down say"Awwh no thanks ive got another bike in mind also" then leave come back in ten mins and start negotiating again.

Of course if Cyclespot troll on KB your ruse may well be up lol.......

You would be surprised how many bike shops have a "Saudi guy" looking at the bike your looking at.

this is like providing materials for a tradesman to do a job, they often get a cut out of selling finance so cash isn't best all the time....

Managed to get a fresh set of front and rear rubber & 6 month rego as part of the purchase price.

The in house finance price generally needs to be a lot less than the cash price for it to make sense. Even when the cash involved is a bank loan.

I feel you weakened your position showing your keenness by putting down a holding deposit. I prefer the "I kinda like it but I'm on the fence - what can you do to get me off the fence and into the saddle" approach. Make them work for it.

No harm in asking. Some people just can't be fucked with all that walk away shit. It's worth X amount to you (whether that is a good deal or not can be a bit subjective sometimes) so put your cards on the table and you'll either own it for that or not. A lot of the fun with vehicles is the looking and buying new shiny toys, that's over once you hand over the cash :P.

You're definitely not going to be laughed at. He'll make a counter offer then you do the same etc. You might do better if you ask for some of the extras as part of a counter offer rather than right at the start. It doesn't really matter at the end of the day provided you're paying an amount that you're happy with to get a bike that you want.

I think that recall is a very cautious one, my TNAB was part of it, story I got was Suzuki NZ have hundreds+ of the head gaskets but very few cam kits in anticipation of what will be needed. AS you say though, Busas aren't involved

Err Reg/Rec and 08-12 Busas included, dunno anything bout headgaskets and cam kits ??

When in fact their game plan was, "we will chuck the tyres & rego on it that it needs anyway in order to sell, only after we have a punter on it. if he gives us a hiding on price, no tyres & rego for him"
I do that shit too.
