Well, I dropped the oil today to put some of my new (apparently gold plated) Oil into it, and found a few little metal filings, they are magnetic so I was thinking Gbox bits? And then took the clutch side cover off to clean the centrifugal filter and found a film of brown/black shite sitting on the bottom with a few more filings of metal, question is. Is the motor toast or is it normal ish to see a bit of shit when ya crack these things open?

It might be no big problem, on a modern engine the filter catches alot of stuff that you never get to see, if I get stuff in the oil i just take my glasses off and it dissapears, change the oil often and you will get less stuff
My neighbours diary says I have boundary issues

    Contradicting statements Mr. Ling

To the OP, you're bikes fine, it's just old. Things get dirty when they get old

Yeah, Thats what I thought, just wanted to double check because assuming its going to be okay and it going pop on my first outing wouldnt be fun... I did how ever take it for another strop around the block and by god, this racing things going to be a learning curve and a half.. Also, what do these ol' CB/XL motors rev to roughly? I still haven't found the point where "the power rolls off" I've been rolling into the eight thousands and it just keeps pulling...

The grass kart guys take basically the same motor to around 13 grand - but crank life suffers badly above about 11500.

Sweet, well assuming my rev counter is kinda calibrated that is. I have some sympathy, I couldn't really bring myself to wind it round much further haha, it's just nice to know whats safe and what isn't

Tachos are usually out a Fair way. Try 17000 and see what happens.
Don't you look at my accountant.
He's the only one I've got.

Give Wallace at Marshland Engineering a call, he has one , likes it, knows alot about them. Other people have them but dont ride them, who did you get yours from?

I think he machined the new barrel in mine? I bought mine from a bloke in New Brighton who bought it from a fella named Nigel Marx. I like it thus far haha, I did have a XL100 a few moons ago that I loved, so it was fairly natural to get the CB, and the price was more than right. I have bought a new tank and seat off a Skyteam Ace, which makes the bike look 10x better, photos to come if anyones interested haha
