what's the general gist here? Ideally, I want to stop pretty quick. The stock brake pads are pretty damn good, which can't be denied. They can get the rear in the air, and wave it round like ya just don't care..

but they're wearing out. And they do get 'kin hot real quick (which is good, but too hot isn't..).

Anyway, do people normally go for an easy stock replacement, or are there any good stoppy stuff around that works that bit better? Of course, price does come into it a little (stock pads I think I was once told could be $75... a pair)

so what else is there?
rear are fine, just the front pair are starting to wear down

My favorite flavour are SBS pads.Ask me to quantify it and I cant. Just that the SBS pads seem to give progressive brakeing and fantastic bite when ya need it

EBC=goodness.
Have you tried a different grade of pad? HH? Race type pad?
Obvious advantages/disadvantages, but I'm sure you knew that...

thanx for the thought CG.. hadn't actually thought about that bit as such. I knew there's more to it than just pads, but not played with different grades. I guess my riding needs have changed. I used to commute, but I moved closer to work so I didn't have to. So now, it's a weekend toy and evening cruiser.. with occasional track use. It's got decent tyres on n stuff, so might as well keep it all going..

Race pads need a fair bit of work in them before they start to work well, don't they..? How long would they last for street use then? Don't want to have to replace them every few thousand ks.. I know it'll depend on how hard I use them etc. Well, put it this way - the current stock pads have just passed 18,000ks.. so At least 10,000 for race pads would be great (note - I'm not at race pace all the time).. What grade is HH?

I highly recommend EBC HH (a race and fast street compound)

That or SBS, they are simply awesome brake pads... I wouldnt go for carbons as you wont get enough heat into them... Race compounds are generally not harder, but operate best at higher temperatures (so that means they are harder)...

But there are others like Versarah etc...

EBC or SBS scintered pads. If you ride like the headcase I think you are, scintered pads will be even better than the stock ones.

Scintered, or "sintered" if you are an "ass" bandit American, means to form a coherent mass by heat and pressure.

Basically it means that the pad material has metal in it. EBC use a copper alloy that gets rid of brake noise altogether, doesn't cause the pad and disc to stick together if you leave the bike parked and the copper alloy is softer than Iron discs so it doesn't wear the rotors out.

I've got EBC Pro-lite rotors and HH pads. The front seizes overnight if I put it away wet.

Just introduced this year. You probably got the last of the iron particle pads. They do stainless as well which will still be on shelves, but the copper will be replacing it as soon as shops order new stock.
