Brakes have developed a bit of a 'clunk'

My bikes at 18000 ks and as the title says a definite clunk has developed when using the brakes. I can feel it sometimes when just slowing down and sometimes when coming to a complete stop. It's easily reproducible by just pushing the bike by hand and applying the brakes.
I dropped into the dealer and after verifying the issue they started checking the wheel and steering head bearings.
There was no problem with the bearings so I was then told ' oh it's cos it has floating discs and they are moving a bit, the more they move the better, don't worry about it.'
Just wanna check with the experts here whether that is reasonable explanation and if I should be checking anything else.
    Cheers

If so, could be warped discs?

GSXR 600/750 k6/7 have a habit of wearing out the rotor carrier, resulting in fore and aft movement of the disc on its carrier, where the bobbins hold it together, and a definite clunk.

How much movement would this result in?
Theres no visible movement and I cant feel any movement if I try to move it with my hand, they feel solid as.

When you say no movement does that mean in the direction they are loaded in also? As in grabbing the disc and trying to 'turn' it around the hub?

To be certain on the play location get someone to hold the bike and apply the brakes and rock the bike back and forth or whatever it is to reproduce it, and while they do that start feeling around the discs, especially the bobbins and you should be able to feel even minor play or 'clicking'.

Floating discs do loosen up, how much is acceptable is mostly up to the rider.

Check the fastest wearing part of whole brake assembly
Especially if they're the oem items

Any movement happened with the calipers ? if you slacken off the mounting bolts theres sometimes movement, like slightly up or down , if there is push caliper uppermost and do bolts up again.

Good place to start. I understand EBCs are a big step up from oem on these bikes.

Well I cant feel any movement if I try a move them in the direction they rotate and the reverse.
We did the rocking back and forth thing in the shop the mech said he could feel it, I
couldn't. It could just be me of course.

Seems to be plenty of pad left.

I first noticed this a couple of weeks ago, I really just want to know if it is a symptom of floating discs or if the shop was fobbing me off.
Interestingly, or maybe not, I can't get them to do it today.

Probably not so much with radial mount

Nothing to do with how much meat is left on the pad

The pad backing plate has bedding itself in for 18k, there'll be a bit of slop by now on leading edges where it loads against the caliper body.
