Try and separate the politics from the person and look on the positve side you bunch of whining cunts. Fuck.
    Again, what he said...

Plus, for the haters, better support her cos she just might see NZ politics as a fallback job.

This may be true - but seriously - what useful thing has she or the United Nations ever actually achieved?

Just another example of the average kiwi male's inability to cope with the idea of a successful woman.

I'm a little conflicted about this.

On the one hand, Helen would seem to be an ideal candidate - She's from somewhere that no one really hates, she is good at what she does and the prestige associated with the job would be great for NZ.

On the other hand, I wasn't a huge fan of her Policies when she was PM here and IMO the UN has lost its way in recent times, especially in regards to its Peacekeeping - its feels more and more like it is turning into the League of Nations....

But that all said, if anyone can put some zest back into the UN, It's Helen.

She's probably got more balls than most of the others in the UN, and is far less likely to have millions in backhanders squirrelled away in a tax haven somewhere.

Unfortunately the UN has just become another body politic, and the main aim of the members is to not upset anyone lest they should get booted out of their comfy chair, and the last thing they want to do is upset big business who really control the events of the world.

Can't see it happening, Secretaries General are usually pretty bland aren't they? Which Helen is most definitely not.

However she's also an extremely shrewd political operator, and wouldn't have put her name in the hat without some idea of the support she can muster, so maybe.

Helen is a long shot at best. Using the normal UN yardstick it's Eastern Europe's turn to provide a Secretary General. There is also a feeling in the corridors of impotence that it's time to have a woman in the role. As it happens there are several apparently strong female candidates from Eastern Europe.

Helen won't really get a look in unless the Eastern European females, for one reason or another, are found unsuitable and some sort of impasse arises. If at that point the member nations start looking for a compromise candidate she may come in for consideration. Until then her confidence that she's the right person for the job doesn't mean very much.

Maybe - but the US and others are off-side with the Eastern Bloc - and the US has a Veto .. as does the UK - and they may well use their veto powers. As will Russia if it doesn't like a US-backed candidate.

Helen is a nice, non-aligned candidate ... a good chance at this time ..
