Dunno what this event cost those involved in actual cash and time but I'm a member of AA for exactly this eventuality. They've rescued me three times over the years including having my bike picked up and transported on two occasions and getting me going and following me into town once. My invoice for this year sits in front of me and with discounts for length of membership, it'll cost me $59.25 for the next year.
Not saying it's for everyone but it's good peace of mind considering my membershiop is effective for any vehicle I'm driving at the time of a whoopsie.

Interesting too that it was a South Islander who made the first response on this thread. Admitting he couldn't help but offering some sage assistance in the form of helpful moral support.
It was only the distance thing that stopped me from hooking the trailer onto the car ..
Plus the Cook Strait Ferry ...

It's bloody cheap insurance, both myself and wifey have it or similar for our bikes and the car.
But there is a downside, when you blow the gearbox on your Eliminator in the middle of the Gentle Annie on a Sunday, don't expect ANY help from the AA. Because we were in Taihape we could not get a loan rental car unless we got ourselves to Taupo or another large town city.
The bike was not picked up for nearly a week and it took another nearly 2 to get it back to Dorkland. Damaged.
Overall though in the 5 years wifey has been riding her bike has been returned to base by the AA twice and overall, despite a few choice words for their superiors to the phone operators they've done OK.
Glad ol Big Dog got home and that there was another KB'er out there ready to step up.
Every day above ground is a good day!:
The AA were good when my van stopped in the Paraparas many moons ago. The tow truck driver told me that all those years of subscriptions were paying off big time as he could only charge the AA contract rate. If called otherwise they could charge whatever they liked - and it would have been a lot more.
There has been discussion on KB previously to the effect that the AA are not really interested in bikes unless you pay their "goldcard" membership rate which is somewhat over $100 IIRC.

naaaa, i got picked up three times in two days by the AA on last trip north on the wing, last one being from the middle of the waioeka gorge on christmas eve, due to length of membership with AA it cost me not one cent and i must say all three contractors that pick us up were excelent with the last one actually diagnosing the problem (fucked alternator) for free, was a broken wire that was unfixable but effen hard to see.
apart from the BS when you first ring up they were excellent
My last renewal in January was $115.75 for AA Plus (5-6 years so far at a guess).
AA will assist, getting you to the nearest service centre, AA Plus will get you home. Then you've got higher levels for motorhomes/caravans etc. The membership covers you, not the vehicle, so it doesn't matter what you're using.
Once you've been a member long enough (sometime soon for me I think) it's unlimited call outs a year, whereas the first few years is limited, plus as years pass you get a bigger discount. When I was frequently travelling the country it was cheap insurance in case something happened. Still value for money really... Some insurance policies have breakdown cover (including my van via AMI and the BMW via Swann) but read the fine print. It's so limited in value it's almost worthless. If you're in the middle of nowhere, you're likely to hit the limit with recovery just getting out there, let alone back.

On reflecting how often there is no cell reception on my way home... and to bolt the door after the horse had legged it... I now have a repair kit under the seat. Second motorbike puncture in 24 years so I hope it's still good when I need it.

Some years ago a text was received from a KBer heading north from the deep south, his bike had ceased to cooperate around the Huntly area. A thread was posted with Jack's contact details, Ixion saw the thread, contacted Motu who went and picked up the stranded biker and got things sorted. Jack was on his way the next day.
And maybe a bit of tongue in cheek as well mate :-)
