    Speedo cable problem

    Hey all

I want to put a different speedo on my bike, but the thread for the mechanical cable is large than the stock cable - the new speedo has an m12 thread boss, whereas the old one was an m10. If I buy another cable with m12 fittings then it won't fit at the wheel end which as the m10 fitting!

So any ideas what to do? Can I get a cable with m10 screw thread one end and m12 the other? or is there some kind of adaptor I can get? Any other ways round this?

    Cheers
    Bryan

just double checked the measurements and it's actually 11mm one end and 12mm the other (speedo end)

    +1, engineer.

You're going to have to pull the 11mm cap off the old speedo cable, then secure it to the new cable after taking one of the 12mm caps off. It'll be fussy work needing the right tools.

Alternative is ebay, go looking for specialist speedo cable assemblies.

    Thanks all.

any idea how you get these collars off the cables though? they are crimped on tight! I don't want to damage my old cable in case I have to go back to the stock speedo.

Melbar want $100 for a cable which is over my budget.

Ebay and google can only find 10mm x 11mm cables, nothing that is 11mm x 12mm

Try wrapping it with a $100 note before using vise grips?

kinda answered your own question there champ.
i've never seen a crimp that was designed to come off.

in saying that, use a power bone saw.

The whole point of a crimp is that it doesn't come off, so, yeah, you'll have to cut the crimp and then lever it off - on both old and new cables, so you can swap the collar over. Then you'll have to find another new crimp to put on to secure it. That means shopping around for the new crimp, then finding the right tool to crimp it (and the tool is probably worth several hundy)... anyway, at this point I'm sure you get the idea.

Sometimes it's just easier and cheaper to cough up and buy the finished product.
