Perf or non-perf leather jacket?

Hi guys,

About to purchase a Alpine stars Jaws Leather jacket. A little stuck on whether to get the perforated version or non perf version. It comes with a removable line. I would like to wear it all in warm conditions and cold bar freezing conditions. Anyone have the Perf or non perf version in CHCH or NZ and can give me some feedback on how they like it in terms or hot or coldness?

The perf jkt is geared towards the warmer weather & even track time (where keeping cooler is prefered)

The non perf is a general year round jkt & for those that favour a solid leather covering.

What climate will you do most of your riding in?
In cold weather as well as the thermal vest in the jkt, you can wear thermals under the perf & raincoat overtop.

If this is your first jkt then you'll learn what you like & want in a jacket by the time you come to buying your next one... & there will be a next one... and another...

Definitely perf. for Summer riding esp if you have liner to insert when weather cools.

I have both and wouldn't ride in the non perf from Nov on.

You can always add a layer anyway.

Thanks I have done heaps of research and lots of fitting and the jacket is great. I ride all year round in New Zealand and am looking at doing a tour of the South island March/April next year few weeks on the road etc. Will have a rain suit by then, So I guess I will be wearing the jacket all year round. As I have never bought a jacket before a proper leather one only had textile I don't know how cold having all that perf will be doing lots of open road riding or how hot the non perf one will be

I'd say get the perf version, it will work nicely with a rainsuit over the top (the perf will reduce the 'sticky' feeling some rainsuit wearers report).

I would suggest buying it snug-fitting enough that you can wear tshirt/back protector underneath but not much else. Loose jackets are no good. Then, if you do wanna use it in depths of winter, you can maybe chuck on a thick, warm, oversized Gore-Tex outdoorsy rainproof type jacket over the top.

PS get the black/white/red or the black/white/green of the Jaws imho, looks a lot sharper than the black/black/black

I have that jacket, non-perf (got it from Colemans for $600 - good deal!). Just remember there is mesh stuff in the arms and on the chest. I've been riding to work in it wearing a tshirt underneath. Sitting in traffic can get a bit warm but just driving along normally it's perfect.

Remember it has cooling zips in the shoulder, and perfs' under the arm, on the sleeve and a few on the chest.

Just another point, I tried on over 10 different jackets prior to getting this one (went to Motomail, Botany Honda and Cycletreads) before Colemans until I found a make/ model that fit right so be careful as the sizing is quite different between brands and styles (I was lucky the one I liked fit me the best of any jacket I tried).

$600 is a good deal! most places in NZ are $749!! I was have no problem supporting the local boys with bike services and tyres but I cant justify the gear price differences unless you get an amazing sale deal!. Jacket on Ebay is $550 at moment including shipping.

Managed to make it to a friends today and tried on his size 52 non perf! fitted like a glove! Have decided on the non perf version due to wanting to wear it in colder temps and his feedback from his experience in cold and hot days.

Why don't you ask a local dealer who has the jacket in stock, if they can match the eBay price? No harm in asking them I say.

Yeah get my bike serviced at Avon City Suzuki and turns out that another sales rep for the company I work for sells them products. so they are going to call me back with a deal on Jackets and pants combo and possibly a new Arai helmet. Looks like I might be spending all my Xmas bonus before I get it.

I did that.

In the end I bought an Alpinestar jacket in San Francisco for $350.

The cost of the jacket and the flight home was less than the local NZ dealer was asking.

haha are you serious! I worked out the cost of the jaws jacket online and bringing it in via customs and taxes and it works out to be $530NZ on ebay + customs fees = $667. NZ retail is $749 but I am sure I can bring them down to about $600 if I get pants too

Absolutely. I had other reasons to be there, but the price comparison is correct.

Free shipping, ask for a deal, I got mine for $600 so no reason they wouldn't do the same. Only down side was they only had black/black.

I ride all year round and theres no way id have a perf jacket , down here in winter you dont want freezing air going in or around your arms trunk or legs go solid. In a more constant warmer part of NZ sure go for perf.
