There are some bikes I find somewhat magical you know what I mean, the X factor, the feeling you get whenever you get on them there is just something that makes you smile and for me the XR150 has this more than any other motorcycle I have owned.

When I went looking for another motorcycle after being without one for around a year I had a few requirements:
    Off road Capability
    Cheap to run
    Cheap to buy
    Reliable
Keep up with 100kph ish traffic (to an extent)

I did some looking around and came across the Honda XR150L and it stuck my interest immediately being only 4K brand new and seeming to tick all the boxes so I did some research online not much information so I bit the bullet the purchased it.

First impressions were good as even being made in china it didn’t seem to affect normal honda quality. Riding it felt light and agile and opening the throttle while knowing it's only 150cc felt zippy enough results in a top speed of 100-105kph ish. The first few weeks of ownership I attempted to get used to riding on some gravel and dirt to build confidence and it handled with ease. After my 1000km service I thought it was time to push the bike a tad further than what its designers had in mind. Talking with a friend we decided we should do a 4000km road trip around the south island camping in doc sites most of the way.

I genuinely never felt like I needed anything more on this trip.
I have owned many bikes from scooters all the way up to a 650 and I can't see myself getting rid of this thing anytime soon.
Another bonus with this bike is that because Honda put so many of these on farms there is an abundance of factory tyres available so my local Honda dealer just sold me a rear for $5 new.

Might update this from time to time with more ramblings

I've also been looking at this bike for a while. Thanks for the review.

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

    Wheelies?

Would an XR250 be better with a couple extra ponies?

    How far on a tank?

Carrying luggage... does the weight of a tent slow you down?

Price, this bike is cheap :P

    300km Ish with gear

Not really too much I could sit at 100kph on the flat with much more gear than that.

I got the boy a used un loved CRF150F basicly the same bike with out the lighting..
was a bit smokey , so have put a 175 kit in it... is a straight bore job no re-sleeve
    kit comes with piston/rings /pin / cam / valve springs... for $350NZ
gives another 3.5hp don't sound like much but when it only has 12hp another
    3.5hp is a 29% increase.. makes a real diffrents.. 16% more CCs..
He's fast out growing it... might become mine soon... He can get his DL in another year
so will put the TTR250 back on the road for him ...
Just can't kill them...being so small 3/4 size & light just makes them fun...

    ..
    Pete

90% of all Harleys built are still on the road... The other 10% made it back home...

Those groms look like fun. But I'm thinking I'd rather a mini motard thing like a little xr150

thanks for the review Slicksta, I bought one in january and have just done an oil change at 600km - I couldn't find an oil filter or even a strainer so I'm currently searching the internet with no greater success than I had with my tools - is there any oil strainer/filter on this bike?

I await the answer with interest. My aircooled gasgas seems to be lacking in the oil filter department, too. Similar engine.

they have a centrifugal oil filter, you have to pull off the side case to clean it, and there is also a strainer you can clean when you do that --- new gasket is needed (or re-use old) once done

--- not as easy/simple as larger dirt-bikes with designated oil filters only need to clean it ~ 20K+

lots of videos of the CB125/XR125L etc -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1lYyQAtJng --- which is the same
