My mates new tiger was pissing oil out of one fork seal within 2k of purchase. He didn't keep it long, but I wonder what is going on?

Welllll, sure. But all manufacturers have similar issues. Aprilias with swingarm linkages made of chocolate, Yamaha R-1's with chocolate gearboxes, hell, old Hondas and their camchain tensioners. My Triumph had a reg/rec recall.
What matters is how it is dealt with. Yamaha from earlier this year is the best example: worldwide recall, a mea culpa, and we will fix it Sir.
So, if OP does not get a remedy from the dealer (unlikely) or Triumph NZ then MVDT or Disputes Tribunal.
The thing is, right, OP has a problem with his bike and tells everyone including the entire internet. OP is happy with his bike and tells his mates down the boozer.
But, it is on the manufacturer/distributor.
Unfortunately, the NZ distributor has something of a track record of being shit to deal with.
