Russell Wright set a 1954 New Zealand speed record of 140 mph (230 km/h) on a Black Lightning at the Tram Road Speed Trials. At the meeting he met Rapide owner Robert "Bob" Burns who had built a streamliner shell for a sidecar record attempt. They formed a partnership for Bob to supply a streamliner shell for Russell's solo world record attempt, if Russell let him use the Black Lightning for his sidecar world record attempt. In December 1954 Bob Burns went first and set a new F.I.M. World Sidecar record of 157 mph (253 km/h), up from 154 mph (248 km/h). On the 2nd of July 1955, Russell Wright set a new F.I.M. world speed record of 185 mph (298 km/h) on the Tram Road at Swannanoa, near Christchurch, while Bob Burns upped his sidecar record to 163.06 mph.

Yes, Bob and Roger Wright set all sorts of records on his Vincent, Dave was a motocross rider and went to the UK to continue in the sport. My brother-in-law worked for Bob at his shop, I was going to ride as swinger at the Speedway for Bob in one of his comebacks in 1967, never materialised though. Dave was a good friend of mine when he came back from the UK in the early 70's.

Yes, good remembering. After the motorway opened and the traffic became too much speed events shifted to the parallel South Eyre Highway. I was in the Pioneer motorbike club and since I worked at the University I had access to very accurate timing equipment and used to do the timing at the events. I even road my 750 Kawasaki H2 at some of them. Bert Monroe came to at least one of them. He could hardly see and hit the shingle on both sides of the road while shifting gears with his hand because of weakness in his ankle. The cop at the barrier at the end of the run had to shift his car in a hurry as Bert hadn't seen the end of the course and was still doing a 100 or so as he went past. Great times, and no health and safety.

    Meanwhile back at the TT.

BSN (Bike Sport News) have an app that can presumably be downloaded from where you download your apps, so far it's free. It's in magazine format and the latest issue covers the TT races.

Technical chief this time was again Adrian Gorst, the very experienced Kiwi, and it was he who made the apology to Hutchinson.
