he transitioned sometime in the last few years

proceeding his transition he was competing as a man, where he was quite a strong lifter;

I think it's pretty much accepted that a male will be some percentage stronger than the equivalent female, so for a man-now-woman to be competing with biological women doesn't look like a level playing field.

I don't have a problem with people changing their gender if it makes them happy. Good on them.
