there were only about ten races in the day, if that, some were twenty lappers, and less variety as mentioned earlier,
guy martin is far more a recognised name to the average punter nowadays than any of the riders in the malboro series with the tt3d movie and his tv work, there's less than a handful of GP or riders that are more widely known than him, in fact maybe one. Died in the wool motorcyclists are getting rarer, he has brought motorcycling to the other people around, like burt munro, john britten etc, to me he was the biggest scalp they could pull for wanganui, if say rossi came who would go and watch him, he wouldn't race, his contract wouldn'e allow it, they might catch a glimpse of him, get an autograph. He was here car racing a couple of years ago, were the car race paddocks full of bikes waiting to get a glimpse of their hero, no.
Horst Saiger is a very well respected european journalist and a big scalp to pull, he is very active on the road racing scene in the northern hemisphere also riding the suzuka eight hour this weekend, as well as reaching many people through his media links. right now the overseas following of the cemetery circuit is bigger than it ever was and riders like these help it climb along.
world champion? the first and only current world champion to my knowledge is Tim Reeves, Jim Redman rode here in the 60's as current world champ but only demo'd on the day.
i don't disagree that the malboro series was huge, best prize money and biggest crowds but was the racing better, was the event better (in those days pretty well every public event drew bigger crowds, there was no sunday trading no videos and less events etc)
we all can sit in the corner and bleat in my day if we choose, or we can live our current lives.

I get where you are coming from and good on you for keeping things alive up there.
I'm far from 'the good old days boy'. But do appreciate what we had,tho not at the time.
I've moved on and ride a modern beast,my money is spent following GPs.
The local scene I don't bother with, well,it can't compare can it.
You'd never go hungry with Nigella Gaz.
If it weren't for flashbacks...I'd have no memory at all..
Ahem!!! I think you will find a big chunk of race day supporters are there for just that reason, "SIDECARS" they are definitely a big draw card, I have seen nothing get the crowds more vocal.
ps if they want to kill off the cemetery circuit crowds, reduce the sidecars, guaranteed.
I am not a road racer, but I do enjoy seeing our home grown riders mixing and often bettering the high calibre of overseas riders who come to NZ, "in my opinion" nothing gets the spectators on their feet like seeing them doing well against often bigger budgets and the latest machinery.
Road racing circuits seem to require a different calibre/type of rider, But you will certainly know this from your previous racing.
I am simply a spectator who is usually standing with jaw dropped, mouth wide open disbelief as these guys scream past within a few feet, often just inches.
can't it, except for the hype we had two races at last years nzsbk with 3 thousandths of a second between first and second, and several over the last four years tat have been tighter, i remember at taupo we had two riders for about ten laps on the same thousandth of a second, and another 1 thousandth's off. I'll shout you a ticket to the Cemetery circuit this year Gary and then you can tell us after how it was.
yip the malboro series in terms of big names was great, but the twenty lap races rather than the more shorted races in a day have to be better entertainment???
the motogp is the highlight to most, but there is way better racing in moto 2 and moto 3 so it's in the eye of the beholder
