Spyda, surely Chas Mortimer was a reigning World Champ when he rode at wanga ?
Hugh came home with a 125 in '61 and was unbelievably fast on it. Ran away from Tommy McC on a VERY good manx at Wigram.
Works bikes 1st and 2nd there - Ginger had a works 250 bultaco here. So quickest circuit in NZ and it was 125, 250,500, LOL....
aint formula one cars a great example of the best not being exciting?
chas mortimer He had his best Grand Prix season in 1973 when he finished second to Kent Andersson in the 125cc world championship
according to wiki was never a world champion
i'd love to be proved wrong re world champs riding there, good way for us trainspotters to have a cock swinging session Greg

Hahaha...nice one! A beer well earned no doubt. As much as I love Wanganui, both as a former competitor and as a spectator, it can't really compare to a round of Moto GP as an experience, no matter how close the racing is. And in saying that, I mean no disrespect to the many many people involved in putting the show on at Wanganui year after year. It's without doubt my favorite road racing event in NZ by miles.

PI would be cheapest and it's a great track, as in one of the very best. Definitely not one of those glorified Go Kart tracks. I was tempted to try Sepang but rain is frequently forecast to arrive about the time the MotoGP race starts so... Some places in SE Asia the arrival time of the rain is very predictable during the wet season, not quite so much at KL apparently.

About Hugh Anderson, his book is available, many bike shops were selling it. Unfortunately I can't access mine because I lent to it Shaun before he had his accident. I only hope he recovers enough to read it. I'm pretty sure Anderson raced his Nortons here when he was riding AJS and Matchless in Europe. It didn't occur to me that he didn't race them whlle on a Suzuki contract?

In answer to another comment; Anderson didn't retire from road racing when the factory did. Things had changed within the team and the way it was run. He had been in the habit of doing a lot of work on his bikes with the mechanic, and using his own engine and gearbox settings rather than those specified. When the factory put a stop to that he decided it was time to leave. With the casualty rate among riders at the time it was probably a wise choice.

I was so glad to got to go to Laguna Seca before they canned it. It's the one GP you can go to where you can just about guarantee it ain't gonna rain!

...I did see water three feet deep on the lower areas there once and silly people getting swept away because they were out of their zone of knowledge and couldn't not get too close to the big storm culverts...the ones that Arnie rode his Harley in while escaping the other Terminator...

...I went to a few 500 GP's in Europe/England in the early eighties, and most of the F1 Grand Prixs over '82 to '84...now it's a bit like rugby tests etc, I'd rather watch on TV, but street racing whether it's here or on the Island is still the greatest spectacle of them all...just one old cunts opinion/observation...I went to the Melbourne F1 GP last year, the cheap flight there was more entertaining...I wont even watch those silly cars on TV now...
