    The media here like to point out how qualified Helen is. Most of the other candidates are silimilarly qualified. There are multiple former Prime Ministers who are currently heading UN agencies. This time there was a feeling that it was time for a woman to lead the UN, so far so good. There was also strong sentiment that this was Eastern Europe's turn, NZ is a long way from Eastern Europe.

    Early on it was pointed out that Helen only had an outside chance, if one of the front runners was unacceptable though, it was possible she could come through as a compromise candidate.

    I haven't seen who the current front runners are but one of the candidates is a female, former prime minster, from an Eastern European country, (Bulgaria) and she also currently heads a UN agency. Id be interested to see how she's going since she'd seem to tick all the boxes.

    Interestingly several strong candidates have had a change of government at home since they nominated, this could create difficulties as all nominees must have the support of their own government.

    Statistically - It's women that are the worst offenders for that...

    As for Helen - I'm on the Fence - it will be good for NZ and good on a principle to see her Nab the top Job - but I wasn't a fan of her Policies in NZ and don't think I would be a fan of her Policies in the UN either.

    Seeing as it's the Murrays who beat their kids to a (dead) pulp I'm assuming that makes it a double insult to them.

    What does/has the UN actually achieved.???

    Under the United Nations Charter, the functions and powers of the Security Council are:

    to maintain international peace and security in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations;
    to investigate any dispute or situation which might lead to international friction;
    to recommend methods of adjusting such disputes or the terms of settlement;
    to formulate plans for the establishment of a system to regulate armaments;
    to determine the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression and to recommend what action should be taken;
    to call on Members to apply economic sanctions and other measures not involving the use of force to prevent or stop aggression;

    Not something I would consider they have been or are successful at to date.

    Listening to Helen Clark there she spoke well and if she walked the talk - she is the last thing that Israel would ever want as secretary general - 8,9,10 - out!

    What Israel wants - Israel gets! and American puppetry always sees to it that she does! watch this space!

    IIRC the Security Council was set up following WW2, so the composition of it reflects the problems they envisioned at that time. The world is currently a very different place with very different problems to the 1940s. It's quite possible that there could be a better mechanism to deal with today's problems than the current Security Council. Don't hold your breath.
