eek New to bikes and NZ (nataliaxen)

    Hello!

One month ago I have moved to the 'coolest little capital in the world' with a 3-month-old unrestricted bike drivers license and just bought KTM Duke 390.
800 km in a couple of weeks and enjoying it so far

I would like to find a company to make some weekend trips in the southern part of the Northern Island and to gain more riding experience.

Those little Dukes look fun. I wouldn't mind have a 690 Duke in the shed.

Welcome! Good to hear you're into it and having a good time

The Wairarapa is one giant bike playground. Get yourself and buddies over the 'takas and take a day and go exploring... there are a lot of good runs in the area between Martinborough and Dannevirke.

Much as I hate to say it, Facebook may well be your friend.
There is a very active group called Wellington Riders, mixed bunch, reflective of the mixture of people who ride motorcycles. The page is a often used to organise group rides. Lots of very good people on there. A word of caution, not all the rides will be suitable for inexperienced riders even if they say "she'll be right...." Get in touch with the group administrators, they are decent guys who will give good advice.
Another group is WARS or Wellington Area Road Skills. This group is BRONZ supported and are more definitively aimed at supporting and mentoring newer riders. They run weekly rides on Tuesday evenings so are on their short winter hiatus at the minute. There are quite a few woman riders in this group with a range of experience who I am sure would be very willing to organise some rides with you.

Cracking bike you have, bit small for my cord fed frame but definitely a good choice

There are a couple top guys in the Wellington riders group on book face. Bulk of them will be exactly the type of fucktards women riders love to be patronized by.

There's plenty good rides around Welly though.

    Where are you from then?

Welcome to NZ, and to the awesome world of two wheels! It's good to see you didn't use your unrestricted license to get a 200hp superbike, but stayed within your comfort level (especially being in a new place and not knowing the road/traffic conditions). Those KTM 390s are lil hooligan machines. I haven't ridden the Duke, but had a short blast on the RC390. Awesome lil single thumper. And you gotta love those back-lit buttons.

I'm in Auckland, else I wouldn't mind a riding companion. But I'm sure you'll find some awesome, friendly riders who are more than happy to show you around.

Anyway, stay safe and have fun!

    Hi all,

    thank you for the replies!

I have joined the FB groups, let's see if there will be more activity during the high season.

Not sure what do you mean by 'patronized'. I am just looking for some company, as it is not that fun to travel alone. Commuting, of course, is different. I just ride 50 km back and forth every working day, trying to analyze my skills and ability to comply with the overall road culture here in NZ. So far it seems quite nice and the other drivers are super polite

It is hard to say, as I have changed 5 countries during the last 15 years, but I was born in Russia. Before moving to NZ I lived in Finland for 7 years, so I speak Finnish, Swedish and Danish quite well.

    Any vikings on the roads???

I mean they're dick heads. They'll want you to know how awesome they are, by telling you how you should be riding. If you're pretty 'fit', they'll invite you on rides endlessly untill they realise you're not going to fuck them.

    It's always the same.

Ah, that's okay for me. I am work mostly among men, because I'm an Information Security specialist, so I got used to that kind of stuff (IF the advises regarding my riding style are more or less sane)

Last Sunday I have had a trip to cape Palliser, and there was an awful mountain road with a lot of turns. There I saw a car that crashed and a woman running around with a policeman (which of course didn't add any confidence to me). We do not have such roads in Finland as the country is mostly flat, so I think that I need some help with improving my riding in such conditions.

Only one of the best rides around on a good day! Stay away when it's windy though. And stay away from group rides.

...bollocks to all the above...tramping boots and a sharp knife are your friend...a compass is cool too, as an accessory...any two wheeled device can get you to the desired spot...pub food is better when you get out of town... avoid loud people, they are generally full of shit...

That 'awful mountain road' is the highlight of any ride from Wellington. We love it. Gets quite competitive over it even. In a group there is a funny we dance we do as we approach. Where we jokey for position based on what bikes are there.

But yeah, we go looking for twisty roads. The straight bits are just for showing off your wheelie skills.
