CB1300 - luggage supports for soft panniers

Questions: have you used soft luggage on yours?
    Did that have any drawbacks?
Have you used luggage supports? If so what variety?
    Any other insight?

Got to wondering because I haven't been on any week away type rides and I would like to be able to do so. The previous owner thought the soft luggage fouled the suspension.

Ended up with a Venture rack and 'pack'.. with a pillion bag for touring..
Only ever found 'hard luggage' that would work on the CB. Other issue with decent size panniers is the exhaust.

Venture pack rack/double pack and tank bag (well two tank bags if you look closely) and two up. Bike was a dream to ride even with all that attached. I think we spent 7-8 days away like this. Just check the tightness of lock screws and tail bolts every other day or so, with such a load those bits can work loose a tad and that's where a breakage can occur, in saying that I have returned home minus a bike bolt on one occasion but with all the luggage.

When I fit the GSX out it will probably be with http://motomail.co.nz/estore/style/vebpmistral.aspx rather than the soft version.

If you have a Ventura rack, you can get bolt on side racks for them. there is a universal kit I believe. Then they do panniers that slide on to them.

    Like this, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiUCnsjdMpQ

Bags up high suck, catch the wind. Even now I have a full Givi set on a trip I use the panniers over the top box as they catch less wind and the bike handles better.

If you need some side bags, Ive got some old ones you can have.

used a set of throw over saddlebags on mine when I first had it, they were smaller "sportsbike type" ones and I never had any problems with them fitting wise, although it's no longer running that enormous original silencer which must interfere with nearly everything! Fitted some Krauser hard panniers now to go with my boring old fart sensible rider mentality

The bike did come with one of them Ventura racks fitted, but I think they look 'orrible so I took it off. It's on the shelf in the garage somewhere if it's any use.....

I am to tight to buy luggage for mine. Not hard to make something that does the job and unbolts when not required.
Ok its not the best looking but it loads up well.

I have a rack I can bolt on when required but need to unbolt the top box to do so. Soft luggage wasn't up to carrying the laptop and lunch so it is a bit of a compromise.

Yes. I am finding this out... but would prefer to keep the pillion seat free. Not much of a romantic getaway if the pillion stays home...

I appreciate the offer, but I have 2 sets already. An expanding set I had for the Hayabusa and a "sport" set that came with the bike.
Ventura don't do one pannier rests for the CB. Tthat set looks awesome so I did look.
Motech do some like that or there are these round bar ones. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140514284821

One of the most infamous wheelie pictures on the Internet was of a bagger being wheelied... no mention until the very end of the article of the bricks in the panniers!

A drill, hole saws, file, stainless pop rivet gun, beers plus some ally I pulled out of a old switchboard. I think there is a bit of a television wall mount bracket and some old bike bits in the shed. I think I paid 50 fro the top box on tardme and already had the panniers.
