What a selection

My workmate who doesn't have a licence yet asked me to check out some new LAMS bikes with him now I don't even know what to suggest.

Some of the new ones have got fairly good.

List of possible bikes is down to

MT07 . Like but not sure about headlight style
Street trip . Is getting above his budget
Ern650 . Build quality seems ok but price seems a little higher than the comp
sv650 . I cant seem to get over the 2pot slider front brakes. That just seems a cost saving exercise and what else is cheep on them. Saying that, they are the cheep bike in the group at 11k new.

xs700 . Seems to be the style he likes and good build quality. Currently $12600 is in the middle of the cost range.

Does any one own a xs700 lams here yet? Mostly a MT07 with slight retro custom look as far as I can tell.
So many options now if your after larger lams.

Kwaka Vulcan 650? Not quite a cruiser but heading in that direction. Seems a nicely finished machine with a fair bit of adjustability for feet, hands etc

Yeah, SV all have the shit sliding caliper. Quite a limiting factor on a pro twin.

We looked at one and its to far in the cruiser style for him he is after naked sports style.
From what I spotted I would be tempted by a dr400 motard if I was starting out on a learners licence.

The Suzuki is a lot of bike for the money. Getting spendy but the Ducati scrambler is nice looking machine. I am also impressed with the Honda cb500 range

Yep so many options now. He has told me he wants stay under 12k if possible but would stretch that a bit for the xs700. I think the mt07 is just under 12k and uses the same engine, frame and suspension as the xs but he prefers the xs style. I think the model is only just arrived in NZ and I was wondering if anyone here has ridden one yet as the shops ones not a demo.
Personally the triumph seems to be more expensive but offers the trick parts that the rest don't have but its not my wallet.
Scrambler will be above his budget also at 15.5

Ive seen a few reviews of the xsr900 and plan to get one in the future is looks awesome better than the mtxx. It's has better brakes and suspension too. And if your mate likes the xsr700 them he can't go wrong imo. But as a new rider shouldn't he buy a shitter first to learn on?

He's probably seen enough reviews but there was another favourable xsr700 review in the Herald's 'Driven' feature this morning.

Look's a bit like they threw it together from whatever was left over in the parts bin to me, I guess that's part of the whole custom thing.

I can hardly talk though, 'people in glass houses...' Funny how the looks of a bike can grow on you the longer you ride it.

Funny how the looks of a bike can grow on you the longer you ride it.

Yeah he has seen it. Would be a good option also but I think he has opinion if hes going to spend over 3k he may as well buy new ride for 18-24 months and sell for about 3k loss giving him a bike that's owed him about 2-3k a year including services tires etc.
He is calculating backwards the cost / return and trying to avoid the upgrade during licence process as far as I can gather.
I think if he found a good ern650 near new with half its warranty and low km that wasn't green he would consider that.
xsr is so new there wont be second hand ones here yet.

I had a look at it in the shop its basically a MT07 with different sub-frame seat bars and lights.
The mainframe even has the mounts for side covers the mt07 has that it doesn't have. You could even argue it should be the same price but I think its a grand dearer.
To me its closer to naked sport than custom more like retro naked. Steering head angle and swingarm is same as MT07.

Fair enough if he gets the xsr and drops it then there are not a lot of plastic bits to break unlike the mt-xx. Another good thing about the xsr is that apparently it doesnt have the typical yamaha snatchy throttle. Thats a big plus for new rider.
