Here is the video of the beach part from 2013.

    One with two wheels?

Sounds like another awesome organised ride! Will keep an eye on this thread.

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

The lead bike on that occasion was Honda NT650 road bike. They got onto the beach after leaving the Cape and met up with the rest of us at Pukenui for a burger and chips.

    Hi,

As the local up here - a dual sport will make things simpler and easier but is not essential. My NT650 is a 248kg fully faired with built in panniers road tourer on a 120/70 17 road front tyre and a 140/80 17 road rear tyre. No, it won't climb sand dunes. But then the locals may take pot shots at you if you do. The beach is generally firm and hard and the only soft bit is normally the 10 or 20 metres between the hard part of the beach and the exit ramp. This has never been a problem for a bike. In the worst case situation two riders can easily walk a road bike through with one person each side. I've had a CB350 Honda twin, a Honda CB 750/4, a BMW K100 RS, a Suzuki RG 500, Honda NT600 and the 650 up and down the beach. In January of this year I took a visitor from the Netherlands on his V50 Moto Guzzi up the beach. The bike was fully loaded with every possession that the owner had in NZ and it was his first ride ever on sand. He had the biggest smile on his face at the end of the ride. Be adventurous!

OK, that does look like fun, but I still wouldn't take the ST1300 on the beach - that bitch is over 320kg before any gear or rider.
Maybe I'll bring the DR650, it's a pretty fun bike to ride and I can fit a decent amount of gear on it.
I took the DR650 to the Cold Kiwi this year, way easier on the wet gravel road in and out as well as getting around the site.

Yeah, set yourself up for success. If you have a good fossick on the site I'm sure you will find photos and stories of riders on fully fledged 1000cc sprot bikes riding 90 mile. My biggest concern is getting fresh water on the bike as soon as poss. I'm a pom and know what saltwater does to a bike....

I reckon your DR will be a better bet in the twisties anyway. Nothing like a series of surprise hairpin bends to slow an ST1300 down. As much as I like them.

It was truly awesome, I highly recommend it – Mark is the man!

If I come along this time I'll be on my heavier bike, even so I don't think I'd be able to resist hitting the beach again.
