    Adventure Riding North of Auckland

A group of us from Central Otago are planning an Adventure ride in the northern half of the North island next March. We plan to start from Taupo and work our up through Kawhia, Raglan. Up thru Dargaville, Hokianga, 90 Mile Beach. Back down thru Bay of Islands, Whangarei and then around Coromandel if we have time.
We'll be trying to keep off tarseal as much as possible.
It would be good to hear of any must see/do roads or places. And any suggestions of good places to stay. We're not planning on taking tents only sleeping bags.
    Any ideas much appreciated.

Start south of Taupo and do kiwi and moki rds then north through pureora for a start.

There are two kinds of adventurers: those who go truly hoping to find adventure and those who go secretly hoping they won't. We should come home from our adventures having faced their perils and uncertainties, endured their discomfort and beaten the odds, with a sly acknowledgment and revitalised solidarity of character.

    Hey nooner
    Check out facebook page
    'South Auckland Adventure riding group'
There's a google map link there that's been shared by New Zealand Adventure rider, with all the dirt roads in NZ.
I've used it planning as many dirt road tracks and off highway routes as I can find to ride on.
    Safe riding.

Thanks. A good link. Still plenty of gravel roads about. If only there was a way around Auckland.

Heading out from Taupo take Kakaho Rd through Pureora on your way west. Then just look for the gravel. If you didn't get north of Awakino during your last trip it's worth heading to Piopio, down Taumatamaire Rd, up the coast from Awakino is more & more tarseal now but still fun, diverting round through Pomarangai is fun for some extra gravel.

Then just stick to the coast as much as possible. Try & time the tides & get on the beach at Poutu.

    Cheers
    Clint

Yup. If heading north over the Mangamukas you can hang a left after the swervey onto the gravel Takahue Saddle road (IIRC) which connects with the Broadwood road and more swervery to Ahipara. If you turn right their is a network of gravel roads which cut across to Totara North / Kaeo / Peria valley.

And another bit of local chicanery, Waipoua forest road. Just try to avoid peak campervan. You can link a lot of gravel from the Bay of Islands down to Whangarei, too. Places like Mimiwhangata are worth a rest stop for the views and maybe a swim. Lovely bit of gravel as well. Quite a few of the roads are used by the Northland rally so are well maintained, beautifully cambered and, er, fast..

Somebody posted on another Northland ride thread that they have rellys running the 90 mile beach camp ground, might be worth further investigation.

There is a forestry road that runs parallel to 90 mile beach if you don't want to get salt on your bikes-but if you don't mind a bit of salt, the run down Aranga beach from Dargaville down to Potu is pretty spectacular,go in at Baylys beach, come back via the partly gravel road from Potu to Dargaville.
