Front rotor rivets, bobbins or buttons.

2012 CBR1000RR aarrrrrrrrr my left front rotor rivets or carrier is worn. That is the rotor can be rotated forward and backwards maybe 0.25 to0.5mm . The right hand side is normal. There is also a little bit of sideways movement on the left but that is the bobbin Springs losing their tension as they are semi floaters. My question is at which point does it become a problem, or is it a problem already. Blade has done 23K road and touring only. I know that there can be a slight amount of movement by design allowing the stainless disc to expand under heat. Disc is not warped at all, virtually no wear.

Well my RS125 disc used to move about 5mm. It was a bit rooted. Honda seem to keep them pretty tight on their roadbikes. Go wiggle a few other bikes to get calibrated but I'm not going to say yeah mate its fine without touching it.

Floaters need some space. In the old days really loose ones were used on race bikes, but they could apparently push the pads back with violent tank slappers on road ccts like IOM. I guess Honda make em tight so there is zero chance of that but you lose some of the floating advantage.

Everyone I've spoken to has a different opinion. When I put everything back together I'll put it through a WOF. Even if it gets thru I'll have to get on with it, wear creates wear, suspect the rivets and carrier. There is a couple of UK sites that machine replacement rivets, joined by 3 point u shaped circuits and epoxy, quite common replacement for BMWrs, and these turning semis into full floaters.

I bought a Brit kit PFM which came with the outer disc, bobbins, wavy washers and circlips.

Grind off the old rivets and use the inners.

    They moved quite a bit.

Had the same issue with my 05 Speed Triple with the carrier being flogged out on one rotor. It had already had one previous issue with a bobbin spring disappearing, but I was on to that rather quick and F1 Engineering repaired that (nice job too).
Can't remember when it became a concern, but possibly around 70k I replaced the rotors.

Did you buy this kit online or through a shop? I've got a set of good carriers with worn disks, and a set of good disks with flogged carriers.

Don't bother, just buy a set of cheap Chinese disks.

Seriously though, there's a place somewhere in the Waikato that can replace the rivets. Not a cheap exercise though.

Yes, that's the place. They made the bar risers that are on the R1 - a quality product.
