Importing G650X with long range tank, fairing and a bunch of other farkles

    Hi all
    First post, please be gentle.
I am a South African looking to relocate to New Zealand. I have a BMW X-Challenge to which I have fitted a bunch of farkles, including:
    • Touratech long range tank
    • Touratech fairing
    • Bash plate with toolbox
    • Custom seat
    • Rallye instruments
    • Touratech chain guard
    • Different front mudguard
    • Touratech HID high beam
    • Touratech halogen low beam
    • 2-finger levers
    • Barkbusters hand guards
    • Barkbusters LED from indicators
    • HDB LED rear indicators
    • R&G tail tidy
    • Leo Vince exhaust
    • A few more which I can't think of right now

Will it be possible to register this in NZ? It is on the road here in South Africa, but NZ sounds a touch stricter.

Only thing which may snag you would be the aftermarket HID headlamp. ADR forbids retrofitting them, and the NZ govt isnt good at thinking about shit so we copy the ozzies.

there will be threads on here about both importing and VINing/registering bikes.

also you're probably going to move to the north shore of auckland, or howick. and there isn't too much call for a bike like that down there. yet.

getting it into nz is easy

getting it road legal may take a bit of doing.

only needs to comply on the day...

so try to find somebody with a legal unmodified bike in nz and swap whatever you need to swap for the day.....

    think you will manage
Opinions are like arseholes: Everybody has got one, but that doesn't mean you got to air it in public all the time....

The entry requirements aren't quite as bad as Aussie (needing an almost original bike) but there are still some gotchas.

You will make a few trips taking the bike for items brake declaration. Make sure you have other paperwork like proof of ownership.

If the exhaust is overly loud it may present an issue but anything normal would be fine. Items like different seat, toolbox and tank aren't an issue. HID light could well be an issue depending on how you've done it. A retrofit into a regular housing is illegal, but yours looks like a complete unit. It will need to meet regs around throw of light (you also drive on left, so this should be OK, not like you're coming from USA) and also beam cut off.

Things like indicators have angles for visibility, but LED indicators per se are fine, with plenty of bikes like KTM and BMW having them factory fitted.

I think you might find NZ a touch small for that calibre of bike
