Questions about buying a bike in nz, and temporary registration?

Hey there!
I'm a young Aussie girl planning my next bike trip to be in New Zealand for a month or two, but I have a few questions..

I have heard that you can make deals with dealers so after you buy the bike they will buy it back? Is this risky or is buying a bike myself and reselling it to the public a better option?

Also, how about registration? I'm not sure how I go about a short term registration if I'll only be there for two months.

Secondly, expect to have some smart arse remarks thrown your way. Thick skin an' all.

I have no experience in 'buy-back' arrangements so I won't comment on those. Depending on what you plan to spend and buy you may be better off buying a bike through the likes of TradeMe and selling it the same way. I guess it depends on whether you need to sell the bike before you leave. Hiring a bike from a specialised shop may be another option for you, especially as they will cover things like registration, no need for you to change ownership, and I guess they have insurance to cover you as well. Registration here in NZ can be done for as little as a month if necessary.

You might want add which city your flying into and what type of bike on the thread so a local can give you a bike shop list in the area.
Its not hard for you to buy one on trademe since you can be a member as an Australian. Selling would be the difficult bit as you would need someone to store it for you until it sold I would say.
Dealership buy backs may not be very common here.

Dealership buy backs are a little expensive but offer some comfort in knowing your outcome less any damage.
Essentially it is a rental but with you carrying the risk so at a lower cost and without a replacement of it breaks down.

You will roughly get a trade in price for it, so about what they expect to get selling it again - costs, - profit margin.

It will be cheaper than a conventional rental.

It will be more expensive than buying and selling privately but with the protections of the consumer legislation.
