Mike Hosking (instant expert on everything) made a plea last night for the coastal route to be replaced by a new inland route Marlbourough to Canterbury. Minister for Everything Steven Joyce was saying this morning that the proposed inland route would involve high altitudes and would consequently be closed too frequently due to snow.

Yes its a nice ride but it will never be the same. Makes sense though while you've got the big gear there to go full monty and double lane as much of it as posssible, put in big tourist bus and truck friendly rest areas with viewing platforms. Then once the job is done they can put all the gear on boats and take it up to the disaster that is roading in Northland.
The far north is a goldmine of tourism and high value real estate waiting to be unlocked with decent infrstructure access and roading.

Putting my money on repair though, just to costly surveying, RMA, land aquisition, weather elements to put anew road anywhere else.
And the rail, the rail HAS to be repaired so makes sense to keep the road there for access.

You may be confusing Marsden with One Tree Point? Marsden Waterways did not explode as per developers predictions. The 'Marsden City' development is a massive fail. Ruakaka is still very much not like the other areas mentioned. Your story is inaccurate.
