Most of the truck traffic on ferry goes to and from christchurch....
With SH1 out if action for quite some time one could only have wished for some alternative way of transporting all those containers. ...

Shame christchurch hasn't got a port....
Shame there is no water connecting north and south islands
Shame we haven't got ferries and ships etc....
Opinions are like arseholes: Everybody has got one, but that doesn't mean you got to air it in public all the time....

I mentioned the RO/RO terminal at Lyttelton earlier. saw a mention of coastal shipping in a news conference too.
Doubt if there's a ship in NZ waters at present free to do it - and doubt if the interisland ferries would want to.
Maybe the one which normally carries mainly rail ?
A ship or ships would have to be sourced and leased - at least a month before anything would be running.

If madness' link was to Pacifica's RO/RO operation, it'll have been fully booked up for months as from yesterday...and only two ships I think anyway.
Bet they're ringing round worldwide for another.
For bike transport it works best ChCh-Auckland. Know guys who've used it for Puke Classic festival and the reverse, guys who've come down for the SoT.
Ship the van and fly at the last minute.

Well he's going to be spending our money in the SI.....

I know you hated Helen with a passion - but she holidayed in NZ. If there was a track available to walk, she walked it - and was happy to be seen doing it for tourism. And seemed to enjoy it too...
What message does John Key's holidays in Hawaii send as Minister of Tourism ?

Similar situation - heading home to Invercargill for Xmas. Mum is 92, so probably not too many more opportunities.
Does anyone know what condition Molesworth is in?
I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I always was.

Did I hear the guy from the Insurance Providers Association, or whatever it's called, on the radio saying that the Christchurch experience with insurers was good?

I pity those people in Kaikoura.

Im not sure why we have thousands of trucks destroying the roads when rail & sea options are available.
Maybe its got to do with the massive amount of RUC's the truckers pay.

This isn't the first time the coast road has been closed, and it won't be the last, it may take a bit longer to get fixed this time though...have done the route from blenheim via the wairau valley a couple of times, a bit tedious and a bit longer but all on pretty good roads.

Just another temporary arrangement, like the broken roads in christchurch.....
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

good to see someone started a "save the cows" kickstarter!!

unfortunately for many of them, they probably have life insurance and it'll be cheaper shooting them.

Good too see the Chinese tourists were safely evacuated by a helicopter chartered by the Chinese Embassy. Fuck everyone else though, as long as their own are safe.
Do these people even have part of a soul?
