Are you saying because a cop enforces laws he actually knows what he is talking about law wise?

For sure most cops have a pretty good grasp of the laws they are enforcing. Not all, but certainly most.

Most have a more detailed knowledge of it than the average punter. Because it's them who get the egg on their face when it goes pear shaped.

Of course, it's easy to pick out individual examples of where cops have made mistakes. For every one of those examples, there are a hundred where it has gone right.

My understanding is the Traffic cops of old used to write up the paperwork by the roadside. They needed to have sufficient knowledge of the relevant laws to do that. Police now may or may not always do this, they take it back to the station where they can consult their betters. Particlularly if they are not specialist traffic cops.

The guy who told me that was a former Chief Traffic Officer so he may have been biased. Or not.

The trucks and regulations pertaining to trucks and heavy vehicles were not so stringent or complicated as they are today. There is specialized heavy vehicle inspection teams working throughout the country (known by truckies as the God Squad).

    http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/dri...forcement-cviu

Most Highway patrol will only stop trucks for obvious issues and rule breaking. If they dont have scales (Most HP dont) ... they may order said truck to a weigh bridge nearby if they believe it is (could be) overweight.

Any safety issues and the truck can ordered off the road. This is not a "drive it home and fix it" order ... the vehicle must be transported or repaired where it is.

Taking it back to the station is no longer an option.

Haven't read this thread from start to finish but, how much feedback has there been from Truckies themselves ?

I don't drive a truck but work in an industry very dependant on them , hmm

It’s diametrically opposed to the sanitised existence of the Lemmings around me in the Dilbert Cartoon hell I live in; it’s life at full volume, perfect colour with high resolution and 10,000 watts of amplification.

There's been naff all feedback from actual truckies, for we're all either out trucking or riding our motorcycles. Maybe seeing off the odd prostitute but that's another tangent altogether...

The amount of contact I've had with Police or CVIU over the years has been varied, none of which has been any big deal to me personally.

The incident described by the OP should have been dealt with by going directly to the trucking firm concerned, IMHO. But no, let's have a good old whine on Kiddiebiker about it instead...

I give lane splitting bikers room where there's some to spare, but get a wee bit miffed with the lads who splice up between traffic in the narrowed roadworks sections.

    *legislation

yeah. but also, and more like, nah. cops have a script to follow.
i wonder if you ever wonder, why you use the (legalese) language you do. so far 10/10 cops i've dealt with, do not.
    i suspect you're no different.
don't get me wrong. you seem like one of the better ones, saving communities together and shit. just...misguided. so terribly misguided. and with that quaint old faith of "king-and-country" sanctimonious bullshit.

No its just the same as cars, CVIU and cops will use their individual discretion as to whether a fault is serious enough immediately order off road or direct to drive a suitable distance to repair.
An exception is failing COF inspection, ist immediately invalid even if time left to run and can only drive direct to place of repair or back to depot to park up.
