Contrails often hung in the air for hours in the 80s over central Otago. I infer that the statement that they didn't is intentional, and meant to plant the idea in the readers head early and sway postie support.

I see contrails just about any time I look up on a clear day and they are all in pretty much the same place every time. Presumably they are created by aircraft flying between Auckland and Wellington and vice versa?

On the other hand, sometimes late at night you can hear a big 'plane fly over. Seriously big. I've wondered what they were. My guess is US Starlifter or similar. Perhaps even an Ilyushin 76 for those predisposed to conspiracies? I've never been able to figure out why they would be here. I'm not really up on great circle routes so wouldn't know if an aicraft on route from California to Christchurch would pass over this location.

Of course if the evil bastards who are supposedly poisoning us all were as clever as they'd need to be, you'd have to ask yourself why wouldn't they be dumping their chemcrap at night so we wouldn't even see them?
