Yeah, riding the klr650, i could see why people get into motards. Dirt bikes on the road is hilarious fun, and they go round corners better than they get credit for.

The uncomfortable seat seems to be a recurring theme though.

KLR seat is not that bad. Or were you on an gen 1? And they're not too top heavy if you don't fill the tank right up - 22 litres of gas is pretty heavy.
it's not a bad thing till you throw a KLR into the mix.
those cheap ass bitches can do anything with ductape.

Yep, without aftermarket options I don't think that the DR650 would be enjoying the popularity it has. Luckily you can buy a seat made by Corbin or Sargeant or Moose or Procycle or Seat Concepts or . . .
Another option is taking the seat to an upholsterer and getting the foam re-done to be more comfortable.

Or using an airhawk seat cushion, sheepskin etc.

I found the seat on my DR350 fine after a few hours on it/getting used to it and actually preferred it over the seat concepts one I have on my bike now as it was narrower.

I should mention that it is fairly rare to see a DR650 with a small fuel tank. When you see one you thing "what's that tank" and then realise that it is something made by a company called "Suzuki" and you wonder why the owner doesn't have a normal one made by Acerbis like everyone else. With a 20L tank you generally get over 300kms range, not usually an issue for most motorcycle riders.

For that matter I don't think I've ever seen a completely stock DR650 except at a dealer with the brand new ones.

I think completely stock the KLR would be a better bike on the road by a long way. With suitable mods either will handle road riding just fine.
The DRZ400 would be good on the road if they added another gear.

    I've had a DR650 for 2 years/60,000 kms (mostly road-going commuting).
Not as road-capable as my previous TDM850, but certainly lightyears better in the Hakataramea/Danseys/MacKenzie environment.
On-road it's quite acceptable. Comfort is enhanced with an Airhawk. With absolutely no qualms at all, I have trips planned to Westport and Rotovegas.
Apart from anything else, long travel suspension rocks in Canterbury/Marlborough, just at the moment...

I found the stock Dr seats fine... when using them regularly. But first ride back after a break... not so much.
