The shame is that this guy (if he did it and it seems quite conclusive) has a history as long as your arm and yet he was still in society till he committed the ultimate crime.

but he's innocent until proven guilty. i've yet to see any conclusive evidence, it all just seems to be media driven. i expect there will be a large group of maori party supporters at the court house today demanding he gets bail, and that the racist pakeha system has no jurisdiction over him anyway.

maybe he should be tried in germany.

Anyone who goes under several different names has got to be dodgy in my book. I'm glad he has been picked up - we live in his backyard so to speak, and regularly head up to Himatangi to collect firewood. I feel a bit safer now he's been arrested.

My heart goes out to the family of the victim, and to the victim herself. Tragic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time - and perhaps being a little too trusting. Unfortunately NZ isn't that 100% safe haven many overseas tourists believe it is.

I'd say the police had some pretty good evidence to charge him - after all, it's not like they had any other strong leads - description of the driver, stolen vehicle, etc. Bet there was some forensic evidence too, you don't commit a crime like that and get away clean.

I'd be happy to see him put to death, it doesn't sound like he was a very productive member of society anyway.
Yes, I am pedantic about spelling and grammar so get used to it!

Probably in the minority here, but I reckon civilised communities don't kill criminals. It is the ultimate taboo: to take another human's life. To punish the crime of taking a life by the (legally sanctioned) taking of a life seems pretty illogical to me. If someone in my family (OK, I exclude my ex-wife...oh, and my ex-in-laws) was murdered by someone I would be the first to want to tie the hangman's noose, or pull the trigger or whatever. Fortunately, in this country, justice is administered by those with cooler heads.

The problem being, with all due respect, some of those heads are so cool, they're frozen solid and people commit heinous crimes and get a slap on the hand with a wet bus ticket(compared to the severity of thier crime)

Perhaps their lives should become so unpleasant that their best option is to top themselves?

Capital punishment has failed to be a deterrent.
Except in one particular case each time it has been applied.

actually, it has been reported that he was a really hard worker, but an angry man with a few lion red sandwiches under his belt.

i still reckon he should be sent to germany for his trial and any punishment

maybe THAT would be a deterrent - you get sent to the country of your victim for trial/imprisonment. you'd be hoping you didn't kill a texan/chinese/iraqis/thai/paki!
