Almost right. Russia prompted the northern part of Korea to take over the southern part to spread the wonderful word that communism brings, and they got as far as the very south of the peninsula.
The Inchon landings started the reversal and eventually the entire country had been taken over by allied forces, all the way up to the chinese border. At that stage a hurried deal was made between Russia and china for the chinese forces to get involved. The line stabilized roughly where the border is today.
The chinese are not friends or allies with the North Koreans, but regard them as a lesser type of people but who they can work with at times...

I remember traveling across China, and being quietly pleased to see that most villages had a satellite dish. Great Leader could tell 'em what to think only up to a point. That's not true in the case of NK, it's more or less completely locked in.
