Modern way? I always thought the inside pedal being as far away from the dirt as possible was the safest way. Is there an advantage to having them inline?

my guess would be when down hill on a mountain bike ya ass aint gonna be on the seat so ya weight is most likely gonna be on the pedals so inline is going to be more controllable unlike a road bike where ya probably gonna have ya ass on the seat so therefor having inside pedal as high as possible is safer while still being controllable.

just gotta remember if ya doubling a mate on the rear carrier on a ten speed it pays to slow down bit more than ya normally would when going downhill and round a tight corner

Figured how to stop that situation once, mind was being doubled on the bar, my ankle went through the front wheel and we stopped....suddenly, kinda hurt bad. The things ya do when yer 7.
Another way I witnessed some years later about 12 was a mate going down a very steep hill and around a bend, unfortunate for him the chain had broken ( no brakes) and the only thing to stop him was a gorse hedge, and it did. At the sudden stop he went right over and landed on his back on a large pile of fresh gorse cuttings on the otherside, basically one very porcupined boy ( don't think he got any tattoos later in life). Anyway he was in terrible pain laying there screaming , but I was worse in a fit of extreme belly laugh after seeing that unfold.

Well, it is probably the only blunt instrument the government have got and it will be coming here sooner rather than later. Interesting to see how the French will deal with a blanket drop in the open road speed limit -

If you are interested, with 380 dead last year and a population of 4.69million our 80.9 deaths per million would put us third worst on that list behind, well, pretty much everywhere in Europe. Closer to India than Italy in fact.

Our roads are closer to India than Italy, having ridden in both countries I can attest to that.

I actually blame modern safety technology in cars. Makers now pretty much advertise new vehicles by the number of safety features - so basically sell the car as 'safe' to the owner. Who believes this and consequently drives like a cunt. Then dies, or kills someone else.

Slower the road, higher the road toll.
    Let's lower those speed limits!

distracted driving killing more than speeding in NZ, was what was on the radio recently.
If we factored in the total number of km travelled per year with the increase in population and huge increase in tourist numbers, I wonder how the numbers
would look, rather than just deaths per year.

My gut feeling is that its not the ones driving newer cars you need to watch out for.
I like in the French Article Bikers complaining.....must really impact on their daily work lives...not, where are the Ferrari, Lambo and Porsche owners complaining.

I don't know about modern bikes but riding one with a half width drum brake and no indicators sure kept me alert riding around the city on Saturday.

It's been the top contender for quite sometime... said radio being one of the top distractions along with hot chicks on side of road & passengers to complete the top 3 (not necessarily in that order)

Ironically watching speed is a distraction & slow traffic/speeds are more likely to have people distracted
