Years back I remember the Nelson beach races - all types off odd stuff turned up, I distinctly remember a big block air cooled Suzuki street bike with dirt tyres howling down the sand.

bit of an odd weekend to pick, one week after the pukekohe classics and two before the sound of thunder, would have been heaps better a week later, give the riders from north time to get down and a lot the options of two meetings in a row down south like they had with the southern classic at levels...
anyway, they had their reasons i guess.

My understanding is that it was Venture Southland who picked the date - based on what was happening in Invercargill.
