Have you considered a plug socket or long socket, put in lathe and just turn it down a touch? Have had to do that for a plug spanner for my dads bike.

yip, turned one down but it relies on the flared end going in, and a narrow shaft further up to allow it to fit. i welded two together which worked fine for the rear cylinder but the frames in the way for the front, i could cut it down but even though i'm prepping the bike for selling i'd like to sell it with a useable spanner too, i've got 38 years of ammassed sparkplug spanners and none fit.

I've worked on these before, from memory it has a hex on the top so you have to do the two tricky ones by putting a spanner on that. Pressed pipe style ones work as well i think, you just have to cross drill in the right place and be careful with the screwdriver you put through it.

it's getting it down through the tunnel first then onto the plug, the plug is not in line with the tunnell....
fits quite a few bikes too

Ah right, and being the trickier of the two to change, it's probably the one that needs changing most!

on my old BROS 400 a couple of universal joints and the cheap T type sparkplug socket (the type with a spring around it)
seemed to do the trick for the tricky ones. Only problem is not being able to torque, however there's not much room so would be pretty hard to over torque.
As you mentioned all the normal sparkplug sockets were too thick.
