You're well over simplifying things, there is what we call "luck" in life but life is not all about luck.
There are self made millionaires which involved many things other than luck
Some people end poor through their own doing & nothing with luck
A lot of road deaths are preventable & thus not luck based but lack of skill/attention
Death in earthquakes is sometimes due to stupidity or mistake again not always luck

You can't just write everything off to "luck", "luck is a small part of life at whole

If you rely on luck so much then why are you even a Christian?

If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.

I'm reading an interesting book at the moment by a chap called Matthew Syed called 'Bounce'. Have a read of that if you think that life, and the way it turns out for you, is about luck.

Perhaps some people simply seek to quaff that heady elixir (Look it up Cassina. Low income doesn't need to mean low IQ.) of risk on a daily basis. I don't count myself as one of them.

I'm starting to enjoy this Forum lark!

While I understand the principle of Occam's Razor (and your assertion that it
apply here), it should not in any way preclude the possibility of both conditions
    applying concurrently.

You would be lynched if you ever came to ChCh and suggested people died in the earthquake here due to stupidity.
There is no guarantee you will not be stupid enough to die in the next earthquake yourself as they happen without warning did you know unlike a tsunami where a warning can be given and some stupid people head to the beach anyway.
You do know "luck running out" is just an expression & not literal ay?
Also the word "sometimes" means occasionally, infrequent, not all the time

Priceless, you could not make this stuff up! Epic thread drift, from outlaw bikers to KB regulars feeding a Hillmorton Hospital graduate!
Imagine the phone calls Cassina makes to Lifeline, ACC, talkback radio etc!

I have never seen a Police car using "muppet" mode with their flashing lights! Priceless!

Yeah, poor dogs. When they get a whiff of someone they know is an arsehole they act on instinct and go for them, very admirable. Sadly, they too often get run over for doing a good deed.

And this whole "luck" thing smacks of a belief in predestination. Check out the road toll in countries where the dominant religion is based on life being preordained, mapped out, unchangeable. Absolutely murderous.

    Feeling lucky today Siriwat?

Oops, I just fed the troll a cupcake. Sorry.

The Buddhist's in Thailand place a small budda amulet in their mouths so Buddha will protect them to protect his image. Muslims just say a prayer to Allah ... and if Allah wants them alive ... so be the will of Allah.

Christians have a similar scheme to the Muslims .. funny that ..

It's the atheists that you have to worry about ...

None of my imaginary friends allow that particular excuse.

But I'm still OK with roughly the current trade-off between road transport advantages vs disadvantages. I mean, when was the last time anyone rounded up the cost of NOT using road transport? And why not? How can you even have a discussion about road safety that doesn't involve the benefits of the system, or the costs of the alternatives? I'd suggest we could kill and maim a hell of a lot more than we currently do without making more than an insignificant dent in the cost of not using your car ever again.

Which rolls nicely into my pet bitch about teh feds closing roads for fucking hours after a minor incident, waiting for fuck knows what, often costing tens of thousands of hours of everyone else's time, all in the name of the fanatical pursuit of the vanishingly small end of the diminishing returns on hugely discredited road safety "initiatives". Get the fucking car off the road, hose the worst of the blood off of it and get out of the fucking way ffs.
Go soothingly on the grease mud, as there lurks the skid demon
