How long is a piece of string ?

More relevant is "How much money am I going to need to start racing ?"

Better to start out slow and enjoy it than crash your brains out trying.

As fast as you feel like going, don't bother with any suggested laptimes just go and try it

...do you have to be fast to race bikes?...if so I've been doing it wrong all these years...who should I talk to, or should I just get a faster bike?...

What bike do you ride? Lap times are relevant by class only. And if you are looking at AMCC race meets then you can be as fast or slow as you like really. I raced a clubmans season in 2013 and there was a guy on a Ducati who was doing 1m50 in round one and 1m20 in round 4. Pretty good improvement.

Hmmm good question. Potentially one that puts a lot off having a go?

I'd use the mindset of recording your own track times and improving on your personal best each outing as a guide.

Is not the race track the ultimate group ride!

Hell no. In a group ride I'd at least hope you'd have some thought for the safety and well being of those around you.

Track race riding is absolutely solitary. Those on track with you can look after themselves and are simply moving scenery.
There are of course protocols for overtaking and not obstructing others but past that, you're on your own.

...part of my new found speed, 5 secs off my best at Levels, has to be attributable to, 'not being as nice as I have been over the years'...the thought of hurting my friends or being hurt by my friends, kept me in the 'just doing it for fun', bracket...now I'm looking for more speed, and I know it's there...losing brain cells to age may have some bearing also...I'm getting my 2 smokers back on the track to reinvigorate my 'jollies quotient'...

Yes agree on all points track riding is the ultimate rush. Currently getting around 1.12 at HD (i think its not exact) but have a lot of room to improve my lines and corner entry/exit speed.

I watched a couple of very close calls at Manfield last weekend, one Chap with a good lead caught up to a slower rider with a just a few laps to go, was travelling very fast just on his front wheel for a while, amazing to see a bike hand standing entering a left hander and survive, the rider lost several places, but pretty sure he managed to regain the lead or recover to 2nd.

But I digress, I over heard that one long time racer was stopped from competing because he was too slow.

What bike are you riding? 1.12 at HD is too fast for Clubmans and would sit you towards the back group of a F1/F2 field, so that’s plenty fast enough to start club racing.
